Inleiding
In de oostelijke hoek van het oude centrum van Grave bevindt zich het voormalige SOCIETEITSGEBOUW 'De Graafsche Poort', een langgerekt, vrijstaand, eclectisch bouwwerk uit 1876. In 1978 is het pand gerestaureerd. De achtergelegen tuin is enkele jaren later voor het grootste deel bebouwd. Het pand (zonder de restanten van de tuin) is gelegen binnen het beschermde stadsgezicht van Grave.
Beschrijving
Het tweelaags gebouw heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond en wordt gedekt door een schilddak met oud Hollandse pannen. De symmetrisch opgezette voorgevel met middenrisaliet en hoeklisenen heeft zeven vensterassen. De begane grond is in blokverband gepleisterd en wordt afgesloten met een geprofileerde cordonlijst; de beletage is in handvorm baksteen opgetrokken en wordt bekroond door een gestuct fries met een geprofileerde, ter hoogte van risaliet en lisenen door consoles ondersteunde, houten blokgoot. In de risaliet is op de begane grond een getoogde paneelvleugeldeur met gietijzeren roosters en handgrepen opgenomen. Op de etage worden een tweetal gekoppelde T-vensters met gestucte, geprofileerde omlijsting en een kuif, door een segmentboognis omvat. Er boven is op het fries de tekst: "sociëteit" aangebracht. In de as van de risaliet is op het dak een dakkapel met piron en rondboogvenster geplaatst. In de overige vensterassen zijn op de beletage T-schuifvensters in gestucte, geprofileerde omlijstingen met kuiven en hardstenen dorpels, geplaatst. Op de begane grond bevinden zich eenvoudige, door een middenstijl gedeelde vensters.
De zijgevels en de achtergevel zijn opgemetseld in handvorm baksteen. In de achtergevel zijn op de etage T-schuifvensters aangebracht. Tegen deze gevel staat over de gehele breedte een gietijzeren veranda, die correspondeert met het vloerniveau van de beletage. De eenvoudig gedetailleerde gietijzeren kolommen dragen een lessenaardak, belegd met golfplaat.
In het interieur leidt een houten trap naar de beletage, waar over de gehele breedte van het gebouw een feestzaal is gesitueerd. Het plafond heeft stucdecoraties.
Waardering
Het sociëteitsgebouw is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van een sociaal-economische en culturele ontwikkeling, namelijk de stichting van gebouwen voor ontspanning door de plaatselijke elite in het bestaande stedelijk weefsel en als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het ontspanningsgebouw. Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de eclectische stijl. Tevens is het waardevol vanwege het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. In the eastern corner of the old centre of Grave is located the former SOCIETY BUILDING 'De Graafsche Poort', an elongated, detached, eclectic building from 1876. In 1978 the premises were restored. The adjoining garden was largely built upon some years later. The premises (without the remains of the garden) are situated within the protected townscape of Grave.
Description
The two-storey building has a rectangular floor plan and is covered by a hipped roof with old Dutch tiles. The symmetrically arranged front facade with central risalit and corner pilasters has seven window bays. The ground floor is rendered in block bond and is finished with a profiled cornice; the piano nobile is built in handmade brick and is crowned by a stuccoed frieze with a profiled, at the level of the risalit and pilasters supported by consoles, wooden gutter. In the risalit is on the ground floor a round-headed panelled door wing with cast-iron grilles and handles. On the storey above are a pair of coupled T-windows with stuccoed, profiled surrounds and a hood, encompassed by a segmental arch. Above this on the frieze the text: "sociëteit" is inscribed. In the axis of the risalit is on the roof a dormer window with slate roof and round-headed window placed. In the remaining window bays are on the piano nobile T-sash windows in stuccoed, profiled surrounds with hoods and stone sills, placed. On the ground floor are simple windows divided by a central mullion.
The side facades and the rear facade are built in handmade brick. In the rear facade are on the storey above T-sash windows inserted. Against this facade stands over the full width a cast-iron veranda, which corresponds with the floor level of the piano nobile. The simply detailed cast-iron columns support a lean-to roof, covered with corrugated sheet.
In the interior a wooden staircase leads to the piano nobile, where over the full width of the building a banqueting hall is situated. The ceiling has stucco decorations.
Appreciation
The society building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an example of a social-economic and cultural development, namely the establishment of buildings for recreation by the local elite in the existing urban fabric and as an example of the typological development of the recreation building. It has architectural-historical value because of the eclectic style. It is also valuable because of the exceptional use of materials and ornamentation. The object has ensemble value as part of a larger whole, which is of national importance in terms of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning aspects. The building is important because of the integrity of its exterior and interior.
