Omschrijving
Inleiding
Omschrijving

Description
Introduction
The administrative office of the Old Burger ORPHANAGE was built in 1904 according to a design by Nicolaas Molenaar and is one of his most important designs. The richly decorated building with careful detailing is a very fine example of combined Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Gothic architecture. Previously the Sneek telephone office was housed on the upper floor; nowadays the building accommodates various businesses and institutions. However, the administrative rooms etc. are still in the hands of the O.B.W. foundation. The building is situated as a corner building at a local widening of the Kleine Kerkstraat (east side). The cast-iron two-part FENCE on the south side is executed in Neo-Gothic style and does not date from the time of construction but dates from approximately 1925-1930. It consists of two, self-contained and enclosed sections, which are placed on either side of the entrance. Against the north side of the building, in 1919 Molenaar once again built a residential complex for the O.B.W. In this building is located the caretaker's residence (Kruizebroederstraat 34) of the office.
In 1996 a fire occurred on the upper floor. The fire and water damage was carefully restored.
Description
The building is constructed in red brick, interrupted by courses in yellow brick, on a stone base with moulding; at the height of the upper floor a stone string course with beneath it a brick mosaic. The slate roof has been replaced by tiles; a simple gutter on corbels. All windows are situated beneath an arch with within it a bonded tracery and brick mosaic; at the height of the floors cast-iron ornamental wall anchors.
The west facade: on the right a stepped gable with crockets, with at the top two four-pane windows, flanked by two niches; below this on the upper floor a bay window beneath an arch, with between the tracery sandstone sculptures (this window is an exact copy of the original window that was lost in the 1996 fire); on the ground floor a window with three-pane fanlight flanked by two stone fascia boards with the inscriptions 'OBW' and '1904'. To the left of this an entrance with a double door, three-pane leaded glass fanlight and concrete calf; above this a bonded balcony on concrete consoles; open balustrade; double balcony door. Next to it on the ground floor two and on the upper floor three windows; above the middle one of the three a Flemish gable with on either side roof dormers with a substantial overhang of the roof and zinc crocket on the ridge.
The south facade: on the right a projecting stepped gable with crockets; at the highest point a stone eagle; at the top two windows and on the ground floor and upper floor a window with in the tracery above the upper floor window sandstone sculptures. To the left of this an entrance as in the west facade but with stone key-stones beneath concrete calf and moulding in the brickwork; beneath a lean-to roof with above it stone fascia board with inscription 'URBI ET ORBI'; on the upper floor a bay window above which a terrace with bonded balustrade; at the corner a lion sculpture. In the flank of the entrance section on the ground floor and the upper floor one window; in the roof a rectangular bonded chimney. In the recessed section on the ground floor a window; on the upper floor a new bay window with sandstone sculptures as in the west facade; above the gutter a stepped gable with hoist beam and a window with shutters.
The east facade (rear facade): more austere; with courses; the windows have a frame with sandstone corner stones and keystones, a large bay window with back door opening onto the central hall and a large bay window of the governors' room, both provided with paned glass. To the left against the facade a storage shed.
The INTERIOR is richly decorated. Central hall: granite floor, white tile wainscoting, painted ornamental decoration on the walls, in particular around doorways and on the barrel vault; bay window of draught vestibule provided with fine leaded glass; feinted mortar-joint painting in vestibule. Governors' room: wooden bay window with fine leaded glass work; painted ornamentation on the ceilings; wooden wainscoting with fixed wooden wall cupboards; parquet floor; two black marble fireplaces; a passage to the caretaker's residence. The upper floor is less richly decorated, but visually and structurally largely original. The kitchen has been modernised; the room of the credit bank was after the fire stripped of the modernisations from the 1950s and restored in style.
