Inleiding

Waardering

- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een cultureel-maatschappelijke ontwikkeling;

- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling;

- voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur, zijnde een uitgesproken voorbeeld van de zogenaamde "postkantorengotiek";

- voor het oeuvre van de architect;

- vanwege het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek;

- vanwege de situering, verbonden met de functie;

- voor het aanzien van het dorp;

- vanwege de architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur;

- vanwege de redelijke mate van architectonische gaafheid van een deel van het interieur (met name het woongedeelte);

- in relatie tot de visuele en structurele gaafheid van de dorpse omgeving;

Introduction

The POST OFFICE at Joure was built in 1904 in Neogothic style, in combination with motifs of the Neo-renaissance (by analogy with this type of building also called "post office style") and realised according to designs by architect C.H. Peters (1847-1931), State Architect for Finance. The building is one of many post offices designed by architect Peters for various Frisian towns and villages (after 1897), commissioned by the head office of the Postal Service. Peters designed his post offices according to a systematic and recognizable building method, which became characteristic of this type of building. Compared to earlier examples, the post offices built after 1897 show some simplification of the still rich detailing and ornamentation of the building components. The post office stands on the main street (Midstraat) in the centre of the village and faces northeast. Against the rear facade, a small extension was added in 1977 on the southeast side, which falls outside national monument protection. The provision for wheelchair users for the left entrance is of recent date. The interior of the rooms on the ground floor, where an employment agency is now located, has been completely rebuilt and adapted to the new function. Above the lowered ceiling of this room, however, the original barrel vault remains. The rooms on the first floor still have their original residential function and are largely in original condition.

Description

The building has a rectangular floor plan, to which two small rectangular wings have been added at the rear, left and right. The building is two storeys high and has a high attic storey. The composite roof, on which three chimneys stand, consists of two gabled roofs covered with black, mortared Dutch tiles. On the roof slope on the front are two roof dormers with four-light windows and hipped roof dormers with slate. The building is constructed in brown brick; natural stone is used for the parapet, dark brown brick for the door surrounds and natural stone for the sills and string courses. The front facade is decorated with facade bands, string course and ornamental wall anchors. The front facade consists of a spout gable two bays wide with a four-bay building section on the right. This section is terminated by an arcaded frieze. In the outer bays (left and right) are respectively the entrance to the office and the entrance to the residential section. The wooden front door with rich carved work providing access to the office section is located beneath a porch with segmental arch. Both entrances are decorated with rich surrounds of moulded stones with below a high three-part fanlight. The T-windows are enlivened by double segmental arches and decorative brickwork in the spandrels. A projecting three-part window opening and a pilaster with ornamental wall anchor close off the spout gable. All windows have high, moulded natural stone sills. In the left side facade is the side entrance. The right side facade adjoins the neighbouring building. In the rear facade, which is terminated by a tooth frieze, are on the first storey two windows with segmental arches and on the second storey three T-windows with transoms and a wooden balcony door with transom and leaded glass. The door gives access to the flat roof of the originally attached section, where three small windows are placed. On the second storey of the projecting rear section on the left side is a window, which is partly obscured by the building component built against it with hipped roof. A wooden door gives access to the space behind the building. In the extension with hipped roof and black Frisian tiles is a large three-part window. The INTERIOR of the first storey is, apart from the corridor, largely no longer original. In the corridor, which is accessible via the right door and leads to the residential section and the space behind the office, the barrel vault and stone floor tiles are still original. At the rear of the corridor are still two wooden doors with carving providing access to the garden and the room at the rear. The staircase to the residential section on the upper floor is also located here. The heavy natural stone staircase is made to appear "lighter" by the moulded wooden handrail with balustrade, which consists of decorative cast-iron elements.

The residential section on the upper floor is virtually original in layout. A richly decorated wooden door provides access to the tiled corridor. To the right of the corridor are the rooms en suite with the sash doors with brass fittings from the brass foundry in Joure. Original are, among others, the ceilings with geometric motif along the edge, the rose, the parquet floors and the black marble fireplace mantel. To the left of the corridor, facing the street, are two bedrooms and the kitchen. The attic storey is in virtually original condition. Valuation

The post office on the Midstraat in Joure is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:

- as a particular expression of a cultural-social development;

- as a particular expression of a typological development;

- for the history of architecture, being an outstanding example of the so-called "post office gothic";

- for the oeuvre of the architect;

- because of the particular use of materials and ornamentation;

- because of its situation, linked to its function;

- for the townscape of the village;

- because of the architectural integrity of the exterior;

- because of the reasonable degree of architectural integrity of part of the interior (particularly the residential section);

- in relation to the visual and structural integrity of the village setting;

- because of its original function and its typological rarity.
