Inleiding
FABRIEKSLOODS met RINGOVEN en SCHOORSTEEN van de voormalige Steenfabriek St.Jozef, ca. 1920. Gesitueerd in het gehucht Daniken, aan de voet van de noordwestelijke helling naar het Zuid-Limburgse plateau, waar ter plaatse de benodigde klei werd gewonnen. Op het fabrieksterrein bevinden zich enkele houten droogrekloodsen, recentere stalen droogrekloodsen, smalsporen en een opzichterswoning.
UITGESLOTEN van bescherming zijn de opzichterswoning alsmede de uit de jaren vijftig van de twintigste eeuw daterende fabrieksuitbreiding aan de zuidoostzijde van het ringovengebouw.
Omschrijving
De fabrieksloods met ringoven heeft een langgerekte rechthoekige plattegrond, in dwarsrichting ten opzichte van de straatweg, en telt één bouwlaag onder een zadeldak met muldenpannen. Rondom de loods een rondgang met lessenaarsdak. De loods is opgetrokken in baksteen, gemetseld in kruisverband. Voor een deel onder een schuine hoek gemetselde lange zijgevels, waarin op regelmatige afstand de rondboogvormige in-, uitrij- en luchttoevoeropeningen van de ringoven zijn aangebracht. Deze openingen hebben een decoratieve omlijsting. Eveneens in de lange gevelzijden, onder het dakoverstek en boven de lessenaarsdaken, reeksen kleine vensteropeningen die voor de lichtinval in de stookzolderverdieping boven de oven zorgen. In de kopgevel aan de straatzijde bevindt zich een aantal rondboogvormige vensterlijsten met siermetselwerk in de vulstukken. Centraal in de kopgevel aan de achterzijde een rechthoekige vensteropening. Daarnaast, onder een stalen latei, een doorbraak in de gevel, waarlangs via een hellingbaan de ruimte boven de ringoven bereikbaar is. De FABRIEKSSCHOORSTEEN aan de zuidoostzijde achter de fabriek is versterkt met ijzeren banden en voorzien van het opschrift "St.Joseph" in gele baksteen.
In het INTERIEUR van de fabrieksloods bevindt zich de RINGOVEN.
De ringoven heeft een gesloten ellipsvorm en bestaat uit een langgerekt, als gevolg van de ovenwarmte grotendeels verglaasd bakstenen tongewelf, waarop aan de lange buitenzijden rondboogvormige toegangen en luchttoevoeropeningen zijn gemaakt. Aan de binnenzijden heeft de oven op regelmatige afstand kleine rondboogvormige ovenmonden.
Waardering
De ringoven van Steenfabriek St.Joseph te Daniken is van grote cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische, technische en typologische ontwikkeling in de grofkeramische industrie. Uit architectuurhistorisch oogpunt is de ringoven van belang voor de geschiedenis van de bouwtechniek. De ringoven is van betekenis vanwege de voor Nederlandse begrippen hooggelegen situering op de plateauhelling, heeft een historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met de bodemgesteldheid ter plaatse en is van belang voor het aanzien van de streek. De ringoven is gaaf bewaard gebleven en beschikt derhalve over een hoge bouwtechnische, typologische en functionele zeldzaamheidswaarde.

FACTORY BUILDING with RING KILN and CHIMNEY of the former St. Joseph Brick Factory, c. 1920. Situated in the hamlet of Daniken, at the foot of the northwestern slope towards the South Limburgian plateau, where the necessary clay was extracted at this location. On the factory site are several wooden drying-shed buildings, more recent steel drying-shed buildings, narrow-gauge tracks and a supervisor's house.
EXCLUDED from protection are the supervisor's house and the factory extension dating from the 1950s on the southeast side of the ring kiln building.
Description
The factory building with ring kiln has an elongated rectangular plan, in cross-direction to the road, and has one storey under a gabled roof with ridge tiles. Around the building a gallery with a lean-to roof. The building is constructed in brick, laid in stretcher bond. For the most part along an oblique angle the long side gables, in which at regular intervals the round-arch-shaped in-, exit and air-inlet openings of the ring kiln are made. These openings have decorative surrounds. Also in the long gable sides, under the roof overhang and above the lean-to roofs, series of small window openings that provide light into the stoke floor above the kiln. In the gable on the street side is a number of round-arch-shaped window frames with decorative brickwork in the infill pieces. Centrally in the gable on the rear side a rectangular window opening. Next to it, under a steel lintel, an opening in the gable, along which via a ramp the space above the ring kiln is accessible. The FACTORY CHIMNEY on the southeast side behind the factory is reinforced with iron bands and provided with the inscription "St.Joseph" in yellow brick.
In the INTERIOR of the factory building is the RING KILN.
The ring kiln has a closed elliptical form and consists of an elongated, as a result of the oven heat largely glazed brick barrel vault, on which on the long external sides round-arch-shaped entrances and air-inlet openings are made. On the inside faces the kiln has at regular intervals small round-arch-shaped oven mouths.
Valuation
The ring kiln of St. Joseph Brick Factory at Daniken is of great cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social-economic, technical and typological development in the coarse ceramics industry. From an architectural-historical perspective the ring kiln is important for the history of building techniques. The ring kiln is significant because of its high location on the plateau slope by Dutch standards, has a historical-spatial relationship with the soil conditions at this location and is important for the appearance of the region.
