Inleiding:
KANTOORGEBOUW "Westerkadehuis" ten behoeve van de Steenkolen- Handelsvereeniging N.V. (S.H.V.) gebouwd in 1914-1916 naar ontwerp in Overgangsarchitectuur van J.P. Stok Wzn. en G. Diehl met decoraties in Nieuwe Kunststijl. Het ontwerp van het Westerkadehuis was het resultaat van een prijsvraag voor een nieuw hoofdkantoor voor de S.H.V.
Omschrijving:
Op de hoek Westerkade / Veerhaven gesitueerd kantoorgebouw van vijf bouwlagen opgetrokken uit vulkanische natuursteen. Het pand heeft een klassieke indeling van een basement met rustica banden (begane grond en eerste verdieping), een middendeel met (gedeeltelijk) een pilasterorde (tweede en derde verdieping) en een afsluiting waarbij de vierde verdieping als een attiek fungeert. Het gebouw heeft een met leien gedekt schilddak. Het gebouw heeft een vrijwel symmetrische opbouw waarbij de hoekpartij het middendeel vormt en negen vensterassen breed is, met aan weerszijden een licht risalerend geveldeel (Westerkadezijde vijf vensterassen breed en Veerhavenzijde vier vensterassen breed).
In de afgeronde middenpartij op de hoek bevindt zich de ingang die wordt geaccentueerd door vier pilasters met eigentijds vormgegeven atlanten - respektievelijk één met schop, twee kolensjouwers, en één met grondboor - die het balkon (drie vensterassen breed) op de tweede verdieping dragen, en door het verhoogde geveldeel met een klok en een klokkentorentje. De twee topgevels bevatten in de punt reliëfs met voorstellingen ontleend aan de scheepvaart. Tussen de vensters op de tweede en derde verdieping is op de muurvlakken een cassettemotief aangebracht. De pilasters over deze twee verdiepingen van het middendeel hebben een gestileerd kapiteel. De rechthoekige vensters, met stalen kozijnen zorgen voor een sterke ritmering van de gevel.
In het interieur zijn de hal en het trappehuis nog vrijwel origineel. De ovaalvormige hal is geheel bekleed met turkoois geglazuurde tegels, waarin enkele stroken met reliëf. Het trappehuis is bekleed met een lichtgekleurde tegel en heeft vensters voorzien van gebrandschilderd glas waarin de initialen van de firma (S.H.V.) en wapenschilden zijn afgebeeld. De trap heeft een koperen leuning.
Waardering:
Representatief vroeg-twintigste eeuws kantoorgebouw "het Westerkadehuis" met bijbehorende decoraties van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde, alsmede als belangrijk werk binnen het oeuvre van J.P. Stok Wzn. Description:
Situated on the corner Westerkade / Veerhaven, an office building of five storeys constructed in volcanic natural stone. The building has a classical arrangement of a basement with rusticated bands (ground floor and first floor), a middle section with (partially) a pilaster order (second and third storeys) and a termination where the fourth storey functions as an attic. The building has a slate-covered hipped roof. The building has an almost symmetrical composition where the corner section forms the middle section and is nine window bays wide, with on either side a slightly projecting facade section (Westerkade side five window bays wide and Veerhaven side four window bays wide).
In the rounded middle section at the corner is located the entrance which is accentuated by four pilasters with contemporaneously designed atlantes - respectively one with spade, two coal carriers, and one with auger - that support the balcony (three window bays wide) on the second floor, and by the raised facade section with a clock and a small clock tower. The two stepped gables contain in the point reliefs with representations drawn from shipping. Between the windows on the second and third floor, a cassette motif has been applied on the wall surfaces. The pilasters over these two storeys of the middle section have a stylised capital. The rectangular windows, with steel frames, provide strong articulation of the facade.
In the interior the hall and staircase are still largely original. The oval hall is entirely lined with turquoise glazed tiles, with some strips in relief. The staircase is lined with light-coloured tile and has windows provided with stained glass in which the initials of the company (S.H.V.) and coats of arms are depicted. The staircase has a copper handrail.

Representative early-twentieth century office building "the Westerkadehuis" with associated decorations of general importance due to architectural and cultural-historical value, as well as an important work within the oeuvre of J.P. Stok Wzn. Also of importance due to ensemble value because of the prominent positioning on the corner of the Veerhaven in the 'Nieuwe Werk' or Shipping Quarter, traditionally dominated by shipping and trading offices.
