Inleiding
Omstreeks 1928 naar een ontwerp van ir. L.J.M. Dirickx van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen gebouwde TUNNEL onder de spoordijk van de spoorlijn Schaesberg-Kerkrade-Simpelveld. De tunnel werd gebouwd in de stijl van het Functionalisme.
Enkel in dit deel van Nederland stelde het landschap bijzondere eisen aan de situering van de spoorlijntrajecten. Het spoorlijntraject Schaesberg-Kerkrade-Simpelveld wordt gekenmerkt door allerlei bijzondere kunstwerken vanwege de hoogteverschillen die moesten worden overwonnen. Deze tunnel in Kerkrade diende om het overige verkeer onder de spoordijk door te leiden.
Omschrijving
De tunnel heeft een rondboogvormige doorsnede, een vorm waarbij de drukvastheid van het beton uiterst effectief wordt benut en waarbij relatief gezien met een geringe hoeveelheid bewapeningsstaal kan worden volstaan. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is gewapend beton.
Waardering
De tunnel bezit cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van een bouwtechnische en typologische ontwikkeling, en op grond van de innovatieve bouwkundige waarde.
