Omschrijving
Inleiding
Omstreeks 1928 naar een ontwerp van ir. L.J.M.

Description
Introduction
Around 1928, built to a design by ir. L.J.M. Dirickx of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen, TUNNELS beneath the railway embankment of the railway line Schaesberg-Kerkrade-Simpelveld. The tunnels were built in the style of Functionalism. The western tunnel was intended for road traffic and the eastern tunnel for the tram line Kerkrade-Heerlen and is now in use as a cycling tunnel.
Description
The two tunnels have a parabolic cross-section, a shape in which the pressure resistance of the concrete is extremely effectively utilized and which allows for relatively limited use of reinforcing steel. The building material applied is reinforced concrete.
Valuation
The two tunnels possess cultural-historical values as distinctive expressions of a structural engineering and typological development, and on the basis of their innovative building-engineering value. Architectural-historical values are derived by the tunnels from the distinctive significance of the objects for the supra-regional history of architecture and building engineering. Ensemble values are possessed by the tunnels as an essential component of the railway line trajectory Schaesberg-Kerkrade-Simpelveld. The tunnels are furthermore of special significance because of their location and thus connected with the development of the region. The tunnels are finally of general importance because of the architectural integrity of the objects and the architectural-historical, particularly concrete-historical, structural engineering, typological and functional rarity and significance for the history of infrastructure.
