Inleiding
Het WINKEL-WOONHUIS aan de Raadhuisstraat te Balk is een in aanleg vroeg-18de-eeuws pand dat in 1929 gedeeltelijk van een nieuwe mansardekap en van een voor de tijd van ontstaan zeer kenmerkende nieuwe voorgevel is voorzien. Een gedeelte van het oude zadeldak bevindt zich nog aan de achterzijde van de woning. De gevel heeft een portiek-pui en is uitgevoerd in een Expressionistische vormentaal. Aan de achterzijde is in 1962, in het kader van woningverbetering, een keuken met plat dak aangebouwd. Deze aanbouw valt wegens te geringe ouderdom buiten de bescherming van rijkswege.
Omschrijving
De voorgevel is een halsgevel met lisenen en uitgevoerd in donkerrode baksteen. Het metselwerk van de zijgevels is uitgevoerd in gele steen.
Het gedeelte met mansardedak is met een verbeterde Hollandse pan belegd en het gedeelte met zadeldak met een rode Hollandse pan. De winkelpui aan de Raadhuisstraat heeft een portiek met aan weerszijden een etalage met etalage-bakken. De etalagevensters hebben een lage borstwering met een keramische lekdorpel. De bovenlichten van de etalage waren voorheen meerruits, maar zijn in 1964 vervangen door enkel glas. Boven de etalage loopt een forse latei met het opschrift: 'JJ.KOK - TEXTIEL'. De winkeldeur heeft een grote ruit en twee dwars geplaatste metalen stangen. Boven de winkeldeur bevindt zich nog een meerruits bovenlicht met gekleurd glas.
De verdieping heeft twee uitkragende dubbele vensters die elk rusten op een gemetselde korbeel. Boven de vensters zit, tussen de hoeklisenen, opnieuw een doorlopende latei die gedeeltelijk meeloopt met de twee uitkragende vensters. In de top van de gevel bevindt zich nog een klein venster. Alle vensters hebben keramische lekdorpels en een rollaag. Op de lisenen en de kop van de gevel zijn staande bloktanden aangebracht. De top van de gevel is afgedekt met zwarte gevelpannen. De westgevel bevat één deur en één venster, de oostgevel heeft één venster ter hoogte van de winkel en één ter hoogte van de woonkamer. De achtergevel heeft twee vensters met bovenlicht en op de verdieping een dubbel venster. Al deze vensters zijn vermoedelijk met de verbouwing van 1929 vervangen. De dakrand heeft een vlechting en er zijn bouwsporen zichtbaar van een gesloopte aanbouw.
Het INTERIEUR verkeert in redelijk originele staat. Het winkelinterieur omvat, staande aan weerszijden van de winkel, twee Neo-classicistisch vormgegeven lage toonbanken met daarachter schappen. Op de houten vloer staan twee etalagebakken waarin zich losse etalagerekken met Art Nouveau versieringen bevinden. De etalages hebben ieder een twaalfruits venster met een achtruits bovenlicht dat de etalage van de winkel scheidt. Achter in de winkel bevindt zich een houten trap naar de verdieping. De vloer is van hout en de wanden zijn met g.g.-delen betimmerd. Achter de winkel ligt de woonkamer die middels een dubbele veelruits schuifdeur van de winkel wordt gescheiden. Rechts naast de trap zit een toegangsdeur tot de hal die doorloopt tot de oude keuken. In deze ruimte, die niet meer als keuken in gebruik is, zijn twee bedsteden. Hierachter ligt de nieuwe aanbouw waar een toegang is naar een kelder onder de bedsteden.
In het woongedeelte hebben geen structurele wijzigingen plaats gevonden. Alle kozijnen en kasten zijn nog grotendeels origineel.
Waardering

Introduction
The SHOP-DWELLING at the Raadhuisstraat in Balk is an early-18th-century building in layout that was partly provided with a new mansard roof and a new front facade very characteristic for the time of its construction in 1929. A section of the old gabled roof remains at the rear of the dwelling. The facade has a porch shop window and is executed in an Expressionistic formal language. At the rear, in 1962, in the context of housing improvement, a kitchen with a flat roof was added. This extension falls outside national protection due to insufficient age.
Description
The front facade is a neck gable with pilasters and executed in dark red brick. The brickwork of the side facades is executed in yellow stone.
The section with mansard roof is covered with an improved Dutch tile and the section with gabled roof with a red Dutch tile. The shop window at the Raadhuisstraat has a porch with shop windows on either side with display bases. The display windows have a low parapet with a ceramic drip tile. The fanlights of the display were formerly multi-pane, but were replaced with single glass in 1964. Above the display runs a substantial lintel with the inscription: 'JJ.KOK - TEXTIEL'. The shop door has a large pane and two horizontally placed metal rods. Above the shop door is still a multi-pane fanlight with coloured glass.
The storey has two projecting double windows that each rest on a mortared corbel. Above the windows, between the corner pilasters, runs again a continuous lintel that partly follows the two projecting windows. At the top of the gable is a small window. All windows have ceramic drip tiles and a roll course. On the pilasters and the head of the gable are set block dentils. The top of the gable is covered with black roof tiles. The west facade contains one door and one window, the east facade has one window at the level of the shop and one at the level of the living room. The rear facade has two windows with fanlight and on the storey a double window. All these windows are presumably replaced with the 1929 alteration. The roof edge has a plaited pattern and building traces are visible of a demolished extension.
The INTERIOR is in reasonably original condition. The shop interior comprises, standing on either side of the shop, two Neo-classically designed low counters with shelves behind. On the wooden floor stand two display bases containing loose shelving with Art Nouveau ornamentation. The displays each have a twelve-pane window with an eight-pane fanlight above that separates the display from the shop. At the back of the shop is a wooden staircase to the storey. The floor is wooden and the walls are clad with g.g. parts. Behind the shop lies the living room which is separated from the shop by way of a double multi-pane sliding door. To the right of the stairs is an access door to the hall that continues to the old kitchen. In this space, which is no longer used as a kitchen, are two bed recesses. Behind this lies the new extension where access is provided to a cellar beneath the bed recesses.
In the residential part no structural alterations have taken place. All frames and cupboards are largely still original.
Valuation
