Omschrijving

Description

The R.K. CHURCH St. Ludgerus was built in 1882-1883 after designs by A. Tepe (1840-1920) in a formal language based on Lower Rhine Gothic. The Neogothic three-aisle basilica is executed in dark red brick in a stretcher bond on an equally dark red tuff frame and is covered by a Maas roof with anthracite-coloured slate. The outer sides of the gutter-boards are clad with scale-shaped slates.

The bell tower, which has three stages and contains the main entrance with portal, has a spire with indentation and on the Raadhuisstraat side a modest roof dormer. Below the spire are 12 lancet-shaped sound holes, one of which is closed in relation to the gabled roof of the nave. In the bell tower hang two bells from 1947 and one from 1995. These fall outside the protection of the national heritage due to insufficient monumental value. On the west side of the tower is the small staircase turret. The entrance lies in a niche together with the large stained-glass window with tracery of the organ choir. Above the double wooden door with iron fittings and a segmental arch are rosette joints made in the brickwork. Above this is the built-in reveal of the choir window. The moulding of the pointed-arch niche itself has a continuous pear-shape.

On the gabled roof of the nave there are three small roof dormers on each side. The roofs of the apse, the two absidioles and the two side aisles each have one roof dormer.

INTERIOR. Both the nave and the side aisles have built-in cross-rib vaults. The apse and the two flanking absidioles have a built-in radial vault with the brickwork between the ribs whitewashed. The columns of the nave are also entirely executed in brickwork, as are the (whitewashed) walls.

In the eastern side aisle lies the baptistry next to the entrance. The hexagonal marble baptismal font is of white marble and has a copper lid and a black marble base. The chapel contains frescoes created by J.M. IJdema (1901-1990), depicting the baptism of Jesus and the exodus from Egypt. In the western side aisle next to the entrance is an icon altar that has been present in the church since the 1930s. A one-manual mechanical organ, made in 1904 by the firm Adema in Leeuwarden. The organ front contains an original painting depicting St. Cecilia with a portative organ. The instrument has 7 registers and an attached pedal. The entrance has a double door with iron fittings in the form of tree branches with holy water stoups on each side of the door.

In the side aisles there is, per bay, a stained-glass window with two variations of built-in traceries. These alternate with each other and correspond to the windows opposite. The clerestory has, per bay, two stained-glass windows on each side.

In the side aisles there are wall paintings, also by J.M. IJdema, depicting the Stations of the Cross. These were executed during World War II and replaced the old Stations of the Cross paintings from 1886.

The separation between the nave and the apse is formed by a white triumphal arch in which a cross hangs (made in 1911 by the 's-Hertogenbosch artist E. de Fernelmond). In front of this is the liturgical centre, which was installed in 1986 following the example of the St. John in 's-Hertogenbosch.

In the three-sided apse there are five stained-glass windows, three of which are stained and painted, with alternating tracery in the form of a heart or diamond. The stained and painted windows were installed in 1912 and made by the art studio Kocken from Utrecht. In the apse stands the so-called Mengelberg altar. This neo-gothic limestone sculptural work with tabernacle was made in 1899 in Utrecht by F. W. Mengelberg for the St. Michael's Church in Zwolle. After this church was demolished in 1963, the altar was purchased. In the eastern absidiole is the Mary altar and in the western absidiole the Sacred Heart altar. Both altars were installed in 1911 and made by Fernelmond. The three windows of both absidioles are executed in stained glass, the middle ones being stained and painted and made by art studio Kocken.

In front of the two absidioles are confessionals in the walls of the side aisles. The two doors of each confessional each have a double stained-glass window.

The floor is of granito, under the original wooden church benches wooden floors have been laid. The free-standing sacristy is connected to the church by a low extension. The sacristy has a rectangular plan and a hipped roof that was replaced in the 1970s. The facades have round-arched windows with built-in tracery. In the roof plane on the side of the parsonage is a roof dormer. The interior of the sacristy has been completely renewed and is therefore of secondary significance for the purposes of protection.
