Inleiding

Introduction

A detached object of the type SWIMMING POOL HOUSE located on the north side of an excavated heath pond on the estate De Baakse Kamp, outside the built-up area north of Zelhem. The house was built in the period 1935-1940 following the completion of the manor house of the De Baakse Kamp estate. The bath house was designed by the owner of the estate, ing. P. de Fremery, in the style of the New Building movement. In addition to private use, the forest pond was also used for swimming instruction for pupils of the Wolfersveenschool. Currently it is in use as a holiday home.

The design exhibits characteristics of the new building movement (1920-1940). Characteristic of this Dutch variant of functionalism is the use of large glass surfaces, steel frames and a concrete skeleton. There was a call for undecorated surfaces without reference to traditional building materials. The application of flat roofs was seen as the fifth facade. For the plan, use was made of a semicircle, fitting within the elementary geometric language of forms with a maximum of air, light and space where the interior space flows into the exterior space, strongly interconnected by the flat roof/canopy. The open front side is oriented to the south with maximum admission of air, light and space. The north side is a closed brick facade.

Description

Symmetrical, whitewashed former swimming pool house consisting of one storey with semicircular plan executed in steel, glass and concrete. Centrally located is the interior space flanked on either side by a canopy-shaped extension supported by columns. The canopy is an extension of the flat roof of the interior space which comprises approximately of the total volume. The glass of the windows and the windscreen is set in a steel frame. The SOUTH SIDE is the front and looks out over the water. This side consists of the inner ring of the semicircular plan. In the facade of the central interior space is a large fixed window flanked on either side by an inset column and a hinged window opening outward respectively. The entrance is located in the right-side facade. To the right of the entrance is an extension, consisting of two changing rooms. The extension has a brick side facade with a round window and a timber front with two doors, finished at the top with mesh. On the left against the left-side facade of the interior space are two identical spaces, including a toilet. To the right of this is a hinged window opening outward. Both side facades flow into a red-painted concrete terrace. The raised terrace is accessible at two points via two brick steps. The canopy above the terrace is supported at the front by two columns. The NORTH SIDE is the rear, which forms the outer ring of the semicircle. The outer ring consists of a white-washed brick facade built in half-brick bond with black-painted brick plinth. On the outside, the brick facade flows into a steel curved windscreen with glass infill. The steel frame of the three-part windscreen rests on a black-painted brick basement. The three coupled screens have a division of (3x3), separated from each other by steel columns. The total screen is placed between two concrete columns which support the canopy on the outside. The symmetry of the rear side is interrupted by a steel staircase with wooden treads, leaning against the brick facade on the left. The staircase provides access to the roof.

In the INTERIOR of the interior space is an original kitchen block with granite worktop against the side wall. Centrally against the rear facade is a fireplace with the chimney shaft and pipe located in the middle at the rear of the roof. In the changing rooms are still the wooden slatted benches, hooks and shelves.
