Inleiding

- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en sociaal-economische ontwikkeling;

- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling;

- vanwege de, ondanks de moderniseringen en verbouwingen, nog goed herkenbare hoofdvorm van het ontwerp;

- vanwege het bijzondere materiaalgebruik, i.c. beton;

- vanwege de uitzonderlijke situering op het dijklichaam, verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de streek als gebied met een recreatieve functie;

- vanwege de, ondanks de moderniseringen en verbouwingen, nog steeds in redelijke mate aanwezige architectonische kwaliteiten van het exterieur;

- in relatie tot de visuele gaafheid van de landschappelijke omgeving;

Introduction

The BATHING PAVILION at Hindeloopen was built in 1913/1914, in a style in which elements of Art Nouveau are combined with elements added at later times. These brought about a general tightening of the main form. The bathing pavilion was built on commission of the "Badvereeniging Hindeloopen". It is situated on the crest of the dike body, which extends between Hindeloopen and Stavoren in a southerly direction, and is oriented towards the west. The concrete pavilion replaced a wooden predecessor from 1912, which could no longer accommodate the rapidly growing number of visitors. At the bathing pavilion, the Badvereeniging regularly organized attractions in its day. The pavilion has meanwhile become a rarity for Friesland.

From the beginning of the 20th century the need for recreation in open nature arose. For that purpose bathing pavilions, hotels, tea houses and summer residences were built. Among others in the South-Western corner, which was very popular due to the presence of lakes, old towns and the coast of the former Zuiderzee. The INTERIOR of the pavilion is, as a result of drastic modernizations (only the beam ceiling and two doors in the hall are still original), of subordinate importance for protection at national level.

Description

The concrete bathing pavilion on rectangular plan is built up from stacked tapering blocks under a flat roof. The corners of the upper block are marked with concrete little towers with 'tent roof'. The pavilion is accessible from road and IJsselmeer side via stairs. The exterior has undergone various alterations in the course of time. One of the most drastic is the closing off of the original veranda by a concrete enclosure and windows with plastic frames.

Valuation

The bathing pavilion, built in 1913-1914 and situated on the crest of the Westerdijk, to the south of Hindeloopen, is of general cultural-historical importance:

- as a particular expression of a cultural and socio-economic development;

- as a particular expression of a typological development;

- on account of the still readily recognizable main form of the design, despite the modernizations and alterations;

- on account of the particular use of material, i.e. concrete;

- on account of the exceptional siting on the dike body, linked with the development of the region as an area with a recreational function;

- on account of the architectural qualities of the exterior remaining in reasonable measure, despite the modernizations and alterations;

- in relation to the visual integrity of the landscape setting;

- on account of typological and functional rarity, being the last remaining beach pavilion in Friesland - in this case from the first quarter of the 20th century.
