Inleiding

Introduction

DOUBLE VILLA, built around 1910 in the villa park Oosterhout, which at that time still fell under the municipality of Heemstede. The property is located at the corner of the Linnaeuslaan and the Oosterhoutlaan. Stylistically, the property can be considered an example of the English country house style.

Description

Double villa built on a free yet mirrored floor plan consisting of ground floor, first floor and attic storey. The property consists in its main form of a rectangular building block that is extended on the long side (parallel to the Oosterhoutlaan) with a double end gable and on both short sides (perpendicular to the Oosterhoutlaan) with single end gables. The property has a composite roof structure consisting of a hipped roof running parallel to the Oosterhoutlaan and a number of gabled roofs that intersect the hipped roof. The roof tiles of the hipped roof are kinked by truncation. The roof is covered with red Dutch tiles. The greatest height is achieved by the ridge line of the hipped roof running parallel to the Oosterhoutlaan. Unlike what is customary with the hipped roof, the ends of the ridge line are extended further, creating triangular tops below both ends. These tops are filled with wooden frames within which are multi-pane rotating casement windows. In this ridge line are three chimneys: a double one in the middle and two single ones near the ends of the ridge line. The masonry consists largely of whitewashed brickwork. Only the ground floor up to door height is built in red brick. The extended double end gable parallel to the Oosterhoutlaan is built in red brick up to first floor height. The attic storey has overhanging timber framing with vertical strips of whitewashed masonry between. The gable tops are always overhanging and resting on beam heads of the attic floor extending beyond the facade line. The roof rests here on extended attic storeys. The infill masonry is set back and whitewashed. The placement of the windows in the masonry is, like the floor plan, free yet mirrored. The double end gable on the Oosterhoutlaan and both end gables perpendicular to it have a centrally placed oriel on the first floor and attic storey. The two highest oriels in the double end gable are located in the projecting timber framing and thus project further outward than the oriels in the masonry below. In both end gables perpendicular to the Oosterhoutlaan, oriels from first floor and attic storey merge into each other. The oriels of the attic storey, however, deviate here due to their rectangular main form. The main entrances of the double villa are placed in the middle of window strips in these two end gables.

Valuation

The well-preserved double villa dating from around 1910 in English country house style is of general importance due to its architectural-historical and cultural-historical value, as well as due to its urban-planning significance as a characteristic component of the early twentieth-century villa park Oosterhout.
