Inleiding
In 1913 in opdracht van de coöperatieve winkelvereniging 'Eigen Hulp' gebouwd ensemble van WINKELHUIZEN, naar ontwerp van de architect Jacob van den Ban en uitgevoerd door de firma W.A. van Zanten, aannemers.
Het gebouw omvatte behalve een drietal winkels ook een kantoor en opslagruimte.
Het pand maakt onderdeel uit van een gesloten gevelwand aan de zuidzijde van de Zijlstraat. Het pand is in Eclectische trant gebouwd met in de decoraties invloeden van de Jugendstil. Sinds 1980 vervult het pand een horeca-functie (stads-café).
Omschrijving
Het direct aan de straat gelegen pand Zijlstraat 56-58 is gebouwd op een rechthoekig grondplan en is drie bouwlagen hoog. Het pand wordt gedekt door een plat dak met overstekende houten lijstgevel.
Het geheel is opgetrokken uit baksteen, waarbij de voorgevel bekleed is met natuursteen. De onderpui is deels bekleed met, met oosterse motieven versierd, gepolijst graniet. De rest van de voorgevel is met een zachte soort natuursteen in blokmotief bekleed.
Het drie traveeën brede pand wordt vanaf de verdieping geleed door enigszins risalerende pilasters die eindigen in een fantasie-kapiteel. De twee middelste pilasters worden ondersteund door rijk versierde kraagstenen. In de linker kraagsteen, die versierd is met oosterse motieven en een gebeeldhouwde personificatie van 'De Kracht', staat in een cartouche "ANNO". De rechter kraagsteen is eveneens versierd met oosterse motieven en een gebeeldhouwde personificatie van 'De Welvaart' en bezit in een cartouche het jaartal "1913". Pilasters en kraagstenen zijn van hetzelfde materiaal als de gevelbekleding. De vensterpartijen in de bovenpui bestaan uit per drie gekoppelde houten schuifvensters. In de middelste travee bevindt zich uitsluitend een entree tot de begane grond. De onderpui staat op een bepleisterde plint. In deze plint bevinden zich de namen van de architect en de aannemer; "J. VAN DEN BAN, ARCHITECT" en "FIRMA W.A. VAN ZANTEN, AANNEMERS".

The building at Zijlstraat 56-58 located directly on the street is built on a rectangular ground plan and is three storeys high. The building is covered by a flat roof with overhanging wooden cornice-topped facade.
The whole is constructed of brick, with the front facade clad in natural stone. The ground-floor frontage is partly clad with polished granite decorated with oriental motifs. The rest of the front facade is clad with a soft type of natural stone in block motif.
The building three bays wide is articulated from the storey upward by slightly projecting pilasters that end in a fantasy capital. The two central pilasters are supported by richly decorated corbels. In the left corbel, which is decorated with oriental motifs and a sculptured personification of 'Strength', stands in a cartouche "ANNO". The right corbel is likewise decorated with oriental motifs and a sculptured personification of 'Prosperity' and possesses in a cartouche the year "1913". Pilasters and corbels are of the same material as the facade cladding. The window sections in the upper frontage consist of per three coupled wooden sash windows. The windows on the first storey are framed by natural stone eyebrow mouldings. Between the first storey and the ground floor is a broad natural stone cornice moulding.
The ground-floor frontage contains the bay-wide shop-window panes. These shop-window panes consist of windows set in wood with fine stained-glass fanlights in truncated ellipse arches. In each bay is an entrance. In the left and right bay this entrance is located to the side, recessed in a small hall. Here is also a door to the upper floors. In the central bay there is exclusively an entrance to the ground floor. The ground-floor frontage stands on a rendered plinth. In this plinth are the names of the architect and the contractor; "J. VAN DEN BAN, ARCHITECT" and "FIRMA W.A. VAN ZANTEN, CONTRACTORS".

Externally largely intact preserved building from 1913 with remarkable combination of Jugendstil, Oriental and Eclectic style elements, of general importance owing to architectural-historical value and cultural-historical value, being a former residential shop of a cooperative retail association, as well as of importance within the oeuvre of Haarlem architect J. van den Ban.
