Inleiding
In 1899 in opdracht van Vroom en Dreesmann gebouwd WINKELWOONHUIS. Het op de hoek Korte Veerstraat/Lange Veerstraat gelegen winkelwoonhuis dat de naam "De Zon" meekreeg, werd gebouwd op de plek van drie eerder gesloopte panden. Het in Eclectische stijl gebouwde pand werd ontworpen door architect P. Kleiweg Dijserinck. Behalve de winkelruimten op de begane grond en de eerste verdieping, bezat het pand op de tweede verdieping de directeurswoning en de slaapkamers voor het personeel dat in die tijd nog intern was. In 1909 werd de winkel uitgebreid met een aangrenzende pand in de Lange Veerstraat. Dit nieuw verworven pand werd bij deze gelegenheid gesloopt en opnieuw opgebouwd naar ontwerp van Kleiweg Dijserinck. Deze uitbreiding van de winkel wijkt in stijl en materiaalgebruik af van het winkeldeel uit 1899.
In 1921 werd de winkelpui van het pand enigszins gewijzigd. Deze wijziging had voornamelijk betrekking op de etalageruiten. Ook werd de reeds bestaande winkelpui in dezelfde stijl doorgetrokken over het in 1909 aangebouwde winkeldeel.
Alhoewel Vroom en Dreesmann in 1934 een nieuw warenhuis opende in de Grote Houtstraat, bleef de winkel in de Korte Veerstraat eveneens in bedrijf. In 1953 kon Vroom en Dreesmann het echter niet langer meer bolwerken op deze locatie en sloot zij de winkel. Vroom en Dreesmann vestigde nu achtereenvolgens een lingerie-atelier en een magazijn in het pand, maar in de jaren '70 werd het pand uiteindelijk toch verkocht. In 1985 werd het gebouw gerestaureerd waarbij de karakteristieken van het pand zoals de ijzeren zuiltjes in het interieur, het glas-in-lood, de houten winkelpui over twee bouwlagen, de Art Déco zuilen voor de deur en dergelijke, behouden bleven.
Omschrijving
Het op de hoek Korte Veerstraat/Lange Veerstraat gelegen winkelwoonhuis is drie bouwlagen hoog en wordt gedekt door een samengestelde kap bekleed met rode shingles. In de kap bevinden zich verscheidene originele dakkapellen die worden gedekt door een schilddak bekleed met metaalplaten. Het in 1909 aangebouwde pand aan de Lange Veerstraat kent een afgeknot schilddak met zwarte pannen en heeft een bakstenen dakkapel in het voorschild.
Het winkelwoonhuis is opgetrokken uit rode verblendsteen op een natuurstenen plint. Het uit 1909 daterende deel van het pand is opgetrokken in gele verblendsteen. Zowel aan de Lange Veerstraat-zijde als aan de Korte Veerstraat-zijde is een deel van de gevel risalerend door de houten kroonlijst heen doorgetrokken tot een tuitgevel. Op de hoek is het pand afgeschuind en is het vanaf de tweede verdieping uitgebouwd met een rechthoekig torentje dat wordt afgesloten door een tentdak. Het tentdak wordt op zijn beurt weer bekroond door een koepeltje met een metalen windvaan met zonnemotief. Het hoektorentje, dat enigszins uitkragend is, wordt ondersteund door natuurstenen kraagstenen die zijn versierd met halffiguren. In het boogveld onder het uitkragende hoektorentje bevindt zich een natuurstenen jaartalsteen die het jaar "1899" vermeldt.
De overige decoratieve elementen in de gevels zijn van natuursteen. Zo zijn de spekbanden over de gevels, de sluitstenen, aanzetstenen, kraagstenen, cordonlijsten, hoekpilasters, hoeklisenen en dergelijke, van een zachte soort natuursteen. In zowel de gevel langs de Korte Veerstraat als in de gevel langs de Lange Veerstraat, bevinden zich in enkele boogvelden boven de vensters sierreliëfs van natuursteen. Zo zijn aan de Korte Veerstraat-zijde op de eerste verdieping twee sierreliëfs terug te vinden met afbeeldingen van een schaapsherder en een weefgetouw (verwijst naar de textielindustrie). Aan de Lange Veerstraat-zijde bevinden zich op de eerste verdieping twee sierreliëfs in gestileerd schelpmotief en op de tweede verdieping wederom twee sierreliëfs met een verwijzing naar de textielindustrie. Het in 1909 aangebouwde pand aan de Lange Veerstraat kent op de tweede verdieping twee natuurstenen palmet-motieven boven de vensters.
De winkelpui, die geheel over de begane grond en deels over de eerste verdieping loopt, bestaat uit grote in hout gevatte etalageruiten met glas-in-lood bovenlichten. De voornamelijk uit hout opgetrokken winkelpui wordt geleed door natuurstenen pilasters in blokmotief. Ter hoogte van de afgeschuinde hoek is de winkelpui op de verdieping uitgebouwd en wordt zij ondersteund door twee met Art Déco motieven versierde zuilen van een zachte natuursteen-soort. Tussen deze twee zuilen bevindt zich de entree bestaande uit een in hout gevatte glazen deur. De winkelpui bevat boven de begane grond en boven de eerste verdieping in hout gevatte banden van zwart glas met daarop een goudkleurige belettering. In de band boven de begane grond staat aan de zijde van de Lange Veerstraat te lezen: "FOURNITUREN, KATOENEN, MANTELS". In de band boven de eerste verdieping staat van links naar rechts te lezen: "DAMESCONFECTIE, DE ZON, KINDERCONFECTIE".
De overig vensters van het pand zijn vrijwel alle houten schuifvensters.
Het interieur van het pand is nog grotendeels in originele staat en kent onder meer nog oorspronkelijke ijzeren zuiltjes.
Waardering
In Eclectische trant gebouwd winkelwoonhuis uit 1899 en 1909 van algemeen belang vanwege architectuurhistorische en cultuurhistorische en typologische waarden als vroeg voorbeeld van een confectiewarenhuis; tevens van belang wegens zijn beeldbepalende ligging op de hoek Lange Veerstraat/Korte Veerstraat.

Description
The shop-dwelling house located at the corner of Korte Veerstraat/Lange Veerstraat is three storeys high and is covered by a composite roof clad with red shingles. In the roof there are several original dormer windows which are covered by a hipped roof clad with metal sheets. The building adjoined in 1909 at Lange Veerstraat has a truncated hipped roof with black tiles and has a brick dormer window in the front hipped roof.
The shop-dwelling house is built in red facing brick on a natural stone plinth. The part of the building dating from 1909 is built in yellow facing brick. On both the Lange Veerstraat side and the Korte Veerstraat side, a part of the facade projects through the wooden cornice up to a spout gable. At the corner the building is bevelled and from the second storey onwards it is enlarged with a rectangular turret which is topped by a tent roof. The tent roof is in turn crowned by a cupola with a metal weathervane with sun motif. The corner turret, which is somewhat projecting, is supported by natural stone corbels decorated with half-figures. In the spandrel below the projecting corner turret there is a natural stone date stone which indicates the year "1899".
The remaining decorative elements in the facades are of natural stone. Thus the stone bands across the facades, the keystones, stone bases, corbels, cornice strips, corner pilasters, corner lisennes and the like, are of a soft type of natural stone. In both the facade along Korte Veerstraat and in the facade along Lange Veerstraat, there are in some spandrels above the windows ornamental stone reliefs. The shop front, which runs entirely across the ground floor and partly across the first storey, consists of large display windows set in wood with stained glass fanlights.
