Inleiding
Aan de oostzijde van de Kruisstraat gelegen SIGARENHANDEL met bijzonder winkelinterieur in Eclectische trant.
Het pand werd gebouwd in 1882 tezamen met de naastgelegen panden Kruisstraat 41 en 43. De drie panden werden tezamen in één uniforme stijl gebouwd met op de begane grond identieke winkelpuien. Bij Kruisstraat 39 en 41 zijn deze winkelpuien nog vrijwel intact aanwezig. Bij Kruisstraat 43 is de oorspronkelijke winkelpui vervangen door een moderne pui.
Het fraaie in eclectische trant ontworpen winkelinterieur van Kruisstraat 39 werd er bij de bouw van het pand ingetimmerd.
Omschrijving
De winkelpui van de sigarenhandel heeft een glazen etalageruit en winkeldeur met houten omlijsting. Het geheel is gebouwd op een crème geverfde natuurstenen plint. De winkelpui wordt aan weerszijden gemarkeerd door een crème geschilderde natuurstenen gecanneleerde pilaster met Ionisch kapiteel. De pilasters dragen een houten hoofdgestel dat de winkelpui afsluit. De pilaster aan de rechterzijde van de winkelpui loopt door in de naast gelegen winkelpui van Kruisstraat 41. Rechts van de winkeldeur bevindt zich een slanke koperen gecanneleerde zuil die is versierd met florale motieven en een Ionisch kapiteel. In het fries van het hoofdgestel bevindt zich een zwarte natuurstenen plaat met daarop in goudkleurige letters: "Sigaren Ao 1832". Dit jaartal slaat terug op het stichtingsjaar van de sigarenhandel, die eerst elders in de Kruisstraat gevestigd was.
Het winkelinterieur van het pand heeft in de plattegrond de vorm van een halve achthoek en is geheel in hout uitgevoerd met ornamenten van gips. Het houtwerk en de gipsornamenten zijn crèmekleurig en mokka-bruin geschilderd.
Alle vijf de zijden van het interieur hebben een geprofileerde arcadeboog met sluitsteen, die wordt gedragen door pilasters met spaarvelden. Tussen de arcadebogen in bevinden zich, op de snijpunten van de vijf zijden, gecanneleerde pilasters over de gehele hoogte van het interieur met rijk versierde Ionische kapitelen.
Bovenaan langs de wanden bevindt zich rondlopend een holvormig fries dat tegen het plafond aan wordt afgesloten door een geprofileerde kroonlijst. In het holvormige fries bevindt zich in elk gevelvlak de naam van een land of landstreek waar tabak vandaan kwam. Deze in goudkleur geschreven en in een cartouche gevatte namen zijn van links naar rechts: "Manilla", "Yara", "Sumatra", "Cuba" en "Havanna". Het plafond zelf is rijk gedecoreerd met stucwerk-ornamenten.
In het middelste vlak van het interieur bevindt zich in de arcadeboog een rijk met ornamenten versierde houten klok waarop twee putti zijn gezeten. De smalle schuine zijden ter weerszijden van de middelste wand zijn met spiegels bekleed. In de twee lange zijwanden bevinden zich onder meer planken voor het tentoonspreiden van de koopwaar.
De rijk gedecoreerde houten toonbank, die wordt afgedekt met een zwart marmeren plaat, is eveneens oorspronkelijk. De toonbank loopt door in de halfronde houten etalage. In het houtwerk van de etalage bevindt zich een sierruit van matglas.
In het midden van de winkel hangt een vijfarmige koperen lamp. Deze voormalige gaslamp hoort bij het interieur van de winkel en is in een latere periode geschikt gemaakt voor elektrische verlichting.
Waardering
De uit 1882 daterende tabakswinkel is van algemeen belang wegens de architectuurhistorische en cultuurhistorische waarden alsmede wegens de gaafheid en zeldzaamheid als zijnde een compleet ingericht winkelpand uit het vierde kwart van de 19de eeuw en met name wegens het gaaf bewaard gebleven en inmiddels zeldzaam geworden winkelinterieur met Eclectische stijlelementen en de bijbehorende winkelpui.

The property was built in 1882 together with the adjacent properties Kruisstraat 41 and 43. The three properties were built together in one uniform style with identical shop fronts on the ground floor. At Kruisstraat 39 and 41 these shop fronts are still largely intact. At Kruisstraat 43 the original shop front has been replaced by a modern one.

Description
The shop front of the cigar merchant's shop has a glazed display window and shop door with wooden frame. The whole is built on a cream-painted natural stone plinth. The shop front is marked on both sides by a cream-painted natural stone fluted pilaster with Ionic capital. The pilasters bear a wooden entablature that closes off the shop front. The pilaster on the right side of the shop front continues into the adjacent shop front of Kruisstraat 41. To the right of the shop door is a slender copper fluted column decorated with floral motifs and an Ionic capital. In the frieze of the entablature is a black natural stone plate with the inscription in gold-coloured letters: "Sigaren Ao 1832". This date refers back to the year the cigar merchant's shop was founded, which was originally established elsewhere on the Kruisstraat.
The shop interior of the property has in plan the form of a half octagon and is entirely executed in wood with ornaments of plaster. The woodwork and plaster ornaments are painted cream and mocha-brown.
All five sides of the interior have a profiled arcade arch with keystone, which is borne by pilasters with spandrels. Between the arcade arches, at the intersection points of the five sides, are fluted pilasters over the entire height of the interior with richly decorated Ionic capitals.
Along the top of the walls runs a hollow frieze that closes against the ceiling by a profiled cornice. In the hollow frieze, on each wall panel is the name of a country or region from which tobacco came. These names written in gold colour and set in a cartouche are from left to right: "Manilla", "Yara", "Sumatra", "Cuba" and "Havanna". The ceiling itself is richly decorated with stucco ornaments.
In the central panel of the interior, in the arcade arch is a richly ornamented wooden clock decorated with ornaments, on which two putti are seated. The narrow sloping sides on either side of the central wall are clad with mirrors. In the two long side walls are, among other things, shelves for the display of merchandise.
The richly decorated wooden counter, topped with a black marble plate, is also original. The counter continues into the semicircular wooden display. In the woodwork of the display is a decorative pane of frosted glass.
In the middle of the shop hangs a five-armed copper lamp. This former gas lamp belongs to the shop interior and was adapted in a later period for electric lighting.
Valuation
The tobacco shop dating from 1882 is of general importance due to architectural-historical and cultural-historical values as well as due to the integrity and rarity as being a completely furnished shop property from the fourth quarter of the 19th century and in particular due to the well-preserved and by now rare shop interior with Eclectic style elements and the associated shop front.
