Inleiding

Introduction

COURTHOUSE designed in 1888 and built in 1889-1890. The courthouse, which forms part of the facade wall on the east side of Jansstraat, was designed by architect W.C. Metzelaar, who at that time was employed by the State Building Service as 'engineer-architect for prisons and courthouses'. Construction of the complex was carried out by contractor C. Eijsvogel from Aarlanderveen.

The courthouse, built in the neo-Renaissance style and currently housing the district court, underwent extensive renovation in the period 1983-1987. During this renovation, only the original facade was retained and new construction was realized behind it.

N.B. The protection applies solely to the front facade of the property at Jansstraat 81.

Description

The courthouse situated in the facade wall on the east side of Jansstraat consists of a basement, piano nobile, first floor and attic storey and is covered by a hipped roof with grey Dutch tiles. The front facade of the property is constructed in red brick on a rusticated plinth of ashlar stone at the level of the basement. The front facade is articulated in three bays, with the five-window-wide central bay set somewhat back. Each bay has above the wooden cornice a small roof dormer with wooden pediment. The front facade is decorated with stone details of sandstone, such as string courses, joinery courses and quoins. The cornice is supported by sandstone brackets. Surrounding the wooden fixed windows are likewise details in sandstone, such as the voussoirs in the reveals above the windows and the Doric square pilasters which serve as the central axis of the windows. At the level of the basement these pilasters are of ashlar stone. Between the basement and the piano nobile and between the piano nobile and the first floor there is a horizontal band filled with ornamental work of coloured brick and sandstone.

The entrance to the courthouse is located in the centre of the set-back central bay and is formed by an ashlar stone landing with stone stairs on either side leading to the wooden double door at the level of the piano nobile. The landing is closed off by a sandstone balcony with balustrade, supported by sandstone pilasters and columns. In the frieze along the front of the richly ornamented balcony there is inscribed in natural stone lettering the word "Justitia".

The ashlar stone railings along the double staircase each end on the street side in a block-shaped ornament with a crown carved in ashlar stone on top. In the block form itself the coat of arms of the Netherlands is carved around. In the railing termination of the left staircase there are on the end face the initials of the architect: 'WCM' (W.C. Metzelaar). Below the landing is a somewhat modified entrance to the basement.

Valuation

Remarkably well-preserved front facade of a courthouse built at the end of the 19th century in neo-Renaissance style, of general importance on account of its architectural historical value, its cultural historical value as a justice building as well as within the oeuvre of W.C. Metzelaar, who served as architect in the justice service; also of importance on account of its prominent location in the facade wall along the east side of Jansstraat.
