Inleiding
Voormalige 'HAARLEMSCHE BROOD- EN MEELFABRIEK' gebouwd in 1876 in neo-Romaanse stijl. Het pand ligt aan de oostzijde van de Bakenessergracht en werd ontworpen door architect Van Dijk uit Capelle aan den IJssel.
De 'Haarlemsche Brood- en Meelfabriek' werd als bedrijf reeds op 4 mei 1866 opgericht. In 1876 werd het nieuwe fabrieksgebouw aan de Bakenessergracht gebouwd. In 1896 werd dit fabrieksgebouw, dat oorspronkelijk vier bouwlagen telde, met één verdieping verhoogd. Hierbij werd in hoofdzaak dezelfde bouwconstructie en bouwstijl aangehouden.
Het hoge gebouw aan de Bakenessergracht deed oorspronkelijk dienst als graan- en meelpakhuis, terwijl hier ook een eigen maalderij was ondergebracht. De eigenlijke bakkerij bevond zich gelijkvloers in een laag gebouw achter het pand aan de Bakenessergracht.
Tot 1946 heeft het pand dienst gedaan als brood- en meelfabriek, daarna huisvestte het drukkerij 'Planeta'. In 1990 is het bedrijfspand verbouwd tot tien appartementen.
Omschrijving
Bakstenen fabrieksgebouw op rechthoekige plattegrond van oorspronkelijk vier, nu vijf bouwlagen. Het gebouw is gedekt met een flauw hellend zadeldak, aan de achterzijde voorzien van een wolfseind, en geheel voorzien van rode, verglaasde kruispannen.
De grotendeels symmetrisch ingedeelde voorgevel is uitgevoerd in metselwerk met sierende elementen in gele baksteen en (sier-)pleisterwerk, en heeft de monumentale ingangspartij met uitkragende rondboog en geprofileerde omlijsting geheel aan de rechterzijde. Verticaal wordt het gevelvlak door lisenen in vijf traveeën gedeeld, waarin zich steeds twee vensterassen bevinden met gekoppelde rondboogvensters. De puntvormige topgevel is voorzien van een klimmend rondboogfries en een tandlijst en wordt bekroond door drie sierlijk gemetselde arkeltorentjes te weerszijden en op de top. Zij- en achtergevels zijn gepleisterd.
Het interieur van het pand heeft een hoofdconstructie van houten balklagen gedragen door gietijzeren kolommen. Deze zware constructie, noodzakelijk voor de oorspronkelijke functie van het gebouw, is nog geheel aanwezig (maar bij de verbouwing van het pand tot appartementen geheel uit het zicht gewerkt). In het exterieur is deze zware constructie nog af te lezen aan het grote aantal staafankers. In de hal is een fraai tegeltableau ingemetseld. Dit tableau herinnert aan het vijftigjarig bestaan van de 'Haarlemsche Brood- en Meelfabriek'.
Waardering
Voormalig uit 1876 daterend fabrieksgebouw van algemeen belang wegens cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde, alsmede wegens typologische en zeldzaamheidswaarde. Het pand is een in goede staat bewaard gebleven voormalige brood- en meelfabriek en vermoedelijk nog de enige resterende van dit type in Nederland. Het gebouw is typerend voor de industriële ontwikkeling in de tweede helft van de 19de eeuw.

Brick factory building on rectangular ground plan of originally four, now five storeys. The building is covered with a shallow-pitched gabled roof, provided on the rear side with a half-hipped roof, and entirely provided with red, glazed cross tiles.
The largely symmetrically arranged front facade is executed in masonry with decorative elements in yellow brick and (decorative) plasterwork, and has the monumental entrance section with projecting round arch and moulded surround entirely on the right side. Vertically the facade surface is divided by pilaster strips into five bays, in which there are always two window axes with coupled round-arch windows. The pointed apex gable is provided with a climbing round-arch frieze and a dentil pattern and is crowned by three decoratively laid small tower arches on either side and at the top. Side and rear facades are plastered.
The interior of the building has a main structure of wooden beams carried by cast-iron columns. This heavy structure, necessary for the original function of the building, is still entirely present (but was completely hidden from view during the conversion of the building into apartments). In the exterior this heavy structure can still be read from the large number of rod anchors. In the hall a fine tile tableau is set into the masonry. This tableau commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the 'Haarlemsche Brood- en Meelfabriek'.
