Inleiding
Houten sacristievloeren.
Metselwerk in Vlaams verband.

Description
Introduction
R.K. CHURCH OF ST. HUBERTUS, 1936-1937. Built in a romantic-modernistic style, designed by architect Alphons Boosten from Maastricht. The church was built on the instructions of building pastor A.F.L. Welters, on behalf of the R.K. Church Board of St. Hubertus at Genhout. Willem Dohmen from Neerbeek acted as contractor.
This church, whose design is inspired by the façade of the Romanesque Basilica of Our Lady at Maastricht, is considered one of the most important exponents of the so-called Limburg Revival. This regional artistic movement from the Interwar period found its inspiration largely in a self-conscious, personal and romantic approach to its own native region. The Hubertus Church is oriented towards the northeast and is dominantly situated in the linear settlement structure of the St.Hubertusstraat. The rectory dating from 1933 by architect Stephan Dings at Beek, the passageway connection between rectory and the northwestern transept arm made in 1937, as well as the ramp for the entrance portico realised in 1984 are EXCLUDED from protection.
Description
The Hubertus Church has a cruciform GROUND PLAN in its main form. A choir with rounded apse, lowered in comparison to the nave, as well as a rounded extension behind each transept arm. The nave is preceded by a tall, massive westwork, beside which a round tower is placed on the southwest side and the baptistry is built on the southeast side.
The nave has a gently sloping GABLED ROOF, the westwork a steep asymmetrical gabled roof, the baptistry a symmetrical gabled roof. The transept arms have steep gabled roofs, partly bent at both sides. The apse has a round, gently sloping conical roof with a short ridge beam. The aforementioned roofs were originally covered with slate tiles, now with slates in Maas laying. The tower has a vaulted, conical copper spire with gilded weathervane and cross. Red copper gutters and downpipes. Canopy gutters on sandstone consoles. High chimney at the junction of the apse and the northwestern transept arm.
The church has round WINDOWS with stained glass in the baptistry, the children's chapel in the southeastern transept arm, on both sides of the apse and in the Hubertus Chapel. In the children's chapel these are three nested round windows with concrete tracery. Tall, rounded arch-shaped windows with stained glass in the apse, in the rounded extensions of the transept arms and in the westwork. Rounded arch-shaped louvres in the tower. Rectangular wooden windows with small glazing bars in the sacristies in the northwestern transept arm. On the first storey three rectangular, vertically divided wooden window frames with twelve-pane glazing bars per pane, on the second storey three rectangular twelve-pane wooden windows. A rectangular wooden twelve-pane window in the former boys' sacristy.
Wooden teak exterior doors built up from rabbeted sections with forged fittings, rounded arch-shaped in the main entrance portico and rectangular in the side entrances.
Foundations and church floors in reinforced RAMMED CONCRETE. Choir, the ring beams of the tower and the relieving arches in reinforced concrete. Vaults of wire gauze in cement mortar. The church floors are laid with Norwegian slate. Wooden sacristy floors.
Rustica plinth and overhanging consoles in French sandstone. External and internal masonry of hard, yellow BRICK manufactured at Beek with grey-white mortar. Masonry in Flemish bond. The church portico has full flush pointing and a roughly rendered ceiling. The remaining façades have flat flush pointing.
Externally the church has a LENGTH of 41 metres, the WIDTH of the nave, with 300 seats, is 13 metres, that of the transept 30 metres. The internal HEIGHT up to the vaults is 15 metres.
The tall WESTWORK has a centrally placed entrance portico, accessible via two rounded arches with threefold roll moulding. Before the brick column, which carries both rounded arches, the Hubertus statue with stag was placed in 1955 on a sandstone console. This statue, executed in German tuff stone, was made by Frans Timmermans. Before the portico three flight steps. Centrally in the portico a rounded arch-shaped, double wooden entrance door with fittings under a fourfold roll moulding. In the right side wall of the portico the rounded arch-shaped wooden door with fittings, which provides access to the draught portico. In the left side wall a rounded arch-shaped window niche with display case. Above the latter door and the window niche a threefold roll moulding. The flat ceiling of the portico is roughly rendered. Centrally in the façade above the entrance portico a recessed rounded arch-shaped steel stained glass window. High under the considerable roof overhang a series of five rounded arch-shaped façade openings, behind which the ceiling of the westwork above the vaults. On the northwest side of the westwork there is an extension under a catslide roof, which exceeds the height of the transept arms. Just above the plinth the recessed steel frame with stained glass of the Hubertus Chapel. On the façade corner the plinth is extended to a small buttress. Higher on the façade corner the memorial stone is placed, sculptured by the Maastricht resident Charles Vos in the form of a Christ figure. The memorial stone bears the inscription "Christ Himself is the cornerstone" and was placed on 15 September 1936. The canopy gutter of the catslide roof is supported by a sandstone console.
Behind this extension the round CORNER TOWER is placed. Just above the plinth of the tower the Hubertus Chapel has a recessed, rounded arch-shaped steel window with stained glass. High in the façade, just below the overhang of the tower spire, is the clock, as well as two pairs of coupled louvres with loud-speaking boards. Moreover, the tower spire is provided all round under the overhang with loud-speaking boards. A small rectangular staircase window. Hidden behind the ridge of the westwork a rounded arch-shaped wooden shutter. On the southeast side of the westwork is the BAPTISTRY, with a ridge height lower than that of the transept arms. This chapel has a recessed round steel window with stained glass in the side façade.
In both long SIDE FAÇADES of the nave there are five tall, rounded arch-shaped stained glass windows. These are recessed in bevelled window frames with bevelled sills, below which are small buttresses.
Both TRANSEPT ARMS have a rectangular teak wooden entrance door with fittings, above which a bent roof section is supported by a column on a low sandstone parapet. The door is accessible via three flight steps. In the corner between transept arms and nave a bevelled small extension with a segmental arch-shaped stained glass window. Above this again a bent roof section. The round extensions on the rear façades of both transept arms have two round, recessed stained glass windows. The northwestern transept arm has a rectangular wooden window with twelve-pane glazing bars beside this extension. In the long side façade of this transept arm the first storey has three rectangular, vertically divided wooden sacristy windows with twelve-pane glazing bars per pane, as well as a round stained glass window, which is visible from the nave; on the second storey three rectangular wooden twelve-pane windows. Relieving arches above the roll mouldings of the sacristy windows which are provided with copper sill covers. The southeastern transept arm has three nested round stained glass windows with concrete tracery in the long side façade. The semi-cylindrically extended APSE has five recessed, rounded arch-shaped stained glass windows, below which are short, flat buttresses. Furthermore the apse has round stained glass windows on either side of the choir, a series of façade openings under the roof overhang and several waterspouts.
The Hubertus Church is a SINGLE-AISLE CRUCIFORM CHURCH with seven cross-ribbed vaults in the nave. These vaults are executed in wire gauze brick and rest on sandstone consoles. On both sides of the nave there is one confessional. The transept arms were respectively fitted out as sacristy and as children's chapel. The children's chapel has no vault. The ceiling form corresponds to the gabled roof form of the transept arm. Between nave and children's chapel a large round separating arch. Behind the high altar placed on a raised platform in the apse there is a choir ambulatory with seven rounded arches. The apse has a cupola vault. The natural stone high altar was designed by architect Boosten and executed by the fa. Laudy at Sittard. The choir occupies the entire width of the nave. Below the choir are the entrance portals. The Hubertus Chapel under the tower as well as the entrance portals have a flat ceiling, the baptistry a barrel vault. The rounded arch-shaped window frames are built up step-wise and have bevelled sills. Original church pews designed by Boosten on wooden platforms. Open jointed, black plinths. In the rich INTERIOR among other things are important the antependium in opaline by Max Weiss, c. 1940; the baptismal font designed by architectural office Boosten in French limestone with gilt copper cover, 1951, provided with four reliefs on the drum of the column by Charles Vos. The round font was made by the firm Laudy at Sittard; glazed ceramic Stations of the Cross, Charles Vos, c. 1939; a glazed clay statue of Joseph, Charles Vos, 1951; wall paintings by Charles Eyck, c. 1940, in the apse (risen Christ, the Nativity, the baptism in the Jordan, 1200 cm x 1200 cm), the sacrament chapel (two angels, 400 x 150 cm), the vaults of the nave (the 12 apostles and the 4 evangelists, 400 square metres). Many figures were portrayed after the example of persons valued by Eyck; stained glass windows by Joep Nicolas, second half of the 20th century and 1937-1938, of which three in the choir ambulatory, one in the nave wall, a rose window in the baptistry and three nested round windows in the children's chapel; a stained glass window of St. Hubertus in the Hubertus Chapel, made in 1937 by Henri Jonas and donated by architect Alphons Boosten; the stained glass window designed by J. Valuation
The R.K. Church of St. Hubertus at Genhout is of great cultural-historical value, on the one hand as a special expression of a spiritual development, on the other hand as a very important expression of the regional cultural movement from the Interwar period which is called the Limburg Revival. The architectural-historical values of this church are very considerable, among other things because of the architectural importance represented by the front façade inspired by the Church of Our Lady at Maastricht. The applied building style expresses a romantic interpretation of regional cultural history influenced by modernism, which makes the church of great importance for the oeuvre of architect Alphons Boosten. The church is characterised by regional material use and ornamentation. Also, owing to the high quality of the interior components, there is a church with a special coherence between exterior and interior. The Hubertus Church is significant because of its situation and is therefore important for the development of the village and the character of the surrounding region. The church has, both externally and internally, a high degree of architectural integrity. Moreover, the Hubertus Church is to be considered rare in a supra-regional context on cultural and architectural-historical grounds, which in connection with the above considerations represents a national significance.
