Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The COURT BUILDING of the canton Beetsterzwaag from 1923 is a striking architectural block in a building style related to the circa 1800 style. The building is situated at the periphery of the built-up area. On the north side is a low caretaker's dwelling, which was converted in 1979 (?) into service rooms. Again adjoining that is a fuel store above a rainwater tank, originally. The design for the "canton court building with offices for the registrar" is by the government architect of Justice Buildings Simon Wijn (1914-1924; specification 508). The court building is set back on a spacious plot bounded by a garden wall at the street side, a hawthorn hedge on the west and north sides and an estate ditch on the east side. It was internally modified in 1979, including for the installation of a lift.
Description
The main volume of the canton court building has a T-shaped ground plan, which with the contemporary extension of the caretaker's dwelling forms a cross-shaped structure. The main volume consists of two storeys under a projecting composite roof covered with black glazed Dutch tiles; the caretaker's dwelling consists of one storey under a half-hipped roof; the fuel store has a flat roof. In the northern roof slope of the main volume is still one of the original four chimneys, halfway up the brick shaft connected with a rod to the roof truss structure. The external brickwork of the entire object is primarily constructed in brown sanded bricks, separated by a roll course from a rusticated basement and enlivened with natural stone, tectonic decorations and a simply decorated brick cornice. Above all windows is a stretching course. The south facade is three bays wide and is articulated by colossal pilasters. The broad corner pilasters rest on a basement; the half-brick recess of the pilasters towards the facade wall corresponds with the narrower colossal pilasters on either side of the central bay. All pilasters have an undecorated, sandstone capital-like termination. The facade wall in which the windows are set is recessed by a further half-brick. The central bay contains an entrance under a chamfered sandstone lintel with egg moulding: a double entrance door with a two-light fanlight provided with oval glazing bars; a three-step granite entrance steps spanning the width of the central risalit. Above the lintel is a sandstone tablet with inscription in metal letters: CANTON COURT. The inscription is finished at the top by a projecting cornice resting on two sandstone consoles. In the second storey are per window bay two H-windows grouped: the lower sash six-pane, the fanlight four-pane with coloured leaded glass. The windows in the side bays have a pre-built breast rail; the windows in the central risalit begin above the sandstone tablet. The central risalit is finished by a gable roof end with a constricted bell gable with natural stone at the angles and an oval six-pane window with sandstone dog-tooth ornament around it in the roll course. In the western side facades of the main volume are various windows: four eight-pane with coloured leaded glass in the fanlights in the first storey: three paired at the location of the original living kitchen and one cross window at the height of the cellar. In the second storey are three ascending H-windows with coloured leaded glass for daylighting in the stairwell and two smaller six-pane H-windows. In the short side of the hipped roof is a two-light gable roof end with four-pane windows. The north facade of the main volume has a six-pane window in the first storey and seven four-pane windows in the second storey. In the roof slope a three-light gable roof end with four-pane windows. The eastern side facade has four times three paired eight-pane windows with coloured leaded glass, except for the windows at the location of the waiting room for the public on the upper floor.
The former caretaker's dwelling under half-hipped roof is constructed in the same type of brick as the main volume: in its dimensions the building is considerably simplified, but in the execution of the detailing consistent with the main volume. In the west facade, in the junction with the main volume, the front door: the step has been replaced by a ramp along the west facade of the main volume. Adjacent in the facade wall is a four-pane window and two paired eight-pane windows. The north facade is intersected by the store and is blank; in the roof slope a gable roof end with double four-pane windows. In the east facade two paired eight-pane windows and in the roof slope a two-light gable roof end with four-pane window.
The store under flat roof is constructed in the same type of brick as the main volume and is even more simplified in its dimensions. The store has on the west side a clamped wooden door with four-pane fanlight and on the north side a two-light with six-pane windows.
The internal structure is partially still original; the arrangement has been modified, in particular as a result of the conversion in 1979. In the former consultation rooms and clerk's office at the front are the stucco ceilings and marble chimneypieces still present; the vestibule and hall are finished in fair-faced brickwork of yellow glazed bricks with a green glazed brick wainscoting; a fine granite flight of steps with landing, an iron railing with wooden handrail between the stair posts set in green glazed brick with granite crowning. In the courtroom two high, brick chimneypieces, one of which is provided with a deep relief depicting a balance scale. In the waiting room for the public a yellow glazed brick chimneypiece. The attic is undivided.
