Inleiding

Description
Introduction
On behalf of the Roman Catholic church council, A. C. Bleys from Hoorn designed in 1867 an INSTITUTIONAL BUILDING with IRONWORK on a plot along the western side of the Steenhoffstraat for the care of the elderly, situated to the southwest of the R.K. Kerk. Bleys was employed as a draughtsman for a very short time at the architectural office of P.J.H. Cuypers, after which he established his own practice in Hoorn where, among others, Jan Stuyt and Willem Kromhout worked. The institutional building is one of the few executed designs by Bleys outside the province of Noord-Holland.
The prehistory of the institution shows that the client initially wanted a more extensive building in which various functions such as a nursery school, an orphanage, a home for elderly men and women and a convent for the sisters could be accommodated. Later proposals become increasingly sober and smaller. Ultimately the building housed dormitories for elderly men, elderly women and for the sisters, a (sewing) school, a sick bay, dining halls, two rooms with seating and a kitchen. The foundation stone was laid on 22 July 1868. The building currently has a multifunctional use.
N.B. The extensions from the 1980s on the rear side fall outside the protection. The interior has been adapted and altered several times over the years.
Description
An institutional building for the care and accommodation of the elderly together with (sewing) school from 1868 in neo-gothic style, situated at some distance and parallel to the road, consisting of two storeys on an approximately rectangular floor plan, covered with a gabled roof tiled with Dutch tiles. The facades built in grey brick have a slightly projecting hardstone plinth and are predominantly furnished with pointed arch windows with cast iron window frames, containing tracery in gothic style. The windows have natural stone sills. Between the two pointed arch windows are small rose windows. Between the storeys a dentil course is laid, while below the eaves gutter a double, projecting dentil course is applied. The eleven-bay-long front facade (east side) has a central risalit with entrance section and stepped gable crown. The entrance consists of a recessed double door in the facade with ornamental fittings, above which a pointed arch fanlight with figurative stained glass filling, depicting Joseph with child. On the first floor a coupled pointed arch window is installed with a natural stone mullion. The stepped gable has a pointed arch niche in which a sandstone relief is placed depicting Mary and Joseph fleeing to Egypt. The three outermost bays have a slight projection and are crowned by a stepped gable with a coping stone. The rear facade is largely obscured from view by later extensions. The main arrangement of this facade is symmetrical with risalits placed in the middle and at the corners in the form of pointed gables under coping stones, of which the middle one has a slightly lower ridge height. Against the corner risalits, in 1915 one-storey extensions under a flat roof were built. These were later heightened with an additional storey. Between said extensions an extension of one storey was built in the 1980s. Both side facades have a similar arrangement with a length of seven bays. The middle bay is accentuated by means of a pointed gable under a coping stone and contains on the ground floor an entrance, the arrangement of which has been somewhat altered. The floor plan arrangement is still partly in the original state. Behind the entrance is the vestibule with the staircase. On the left is the former reception room and on the right the former consulting room. Perpendicular behind the vestibule is a corridor, to which originally were connected the so-called rooms with seating, the refectory, the kitchen, a sick bay and the school. On the first floor were the dormitories.
In front of the building lies a forecourt. The plot is bounded at the street side by means of a low wall with mortared piers, both with saddle-back coping. Between the piers an iron railing is placed on the low walls.
Valuation
The former institutional building for the elderly together with school with associated ironwork is of general importance on account of its cultural and architectural-historical value as a good example of an institutional building in neo-gothic style from the end of the 19th century and as an early work in the oeuvre of architect A.C. Bleys. It is moreover typologically important as a characteristic example of 19th-century care for the elderly by Roman Catholics. The institutional building with ironwork is intact with respect to the main form and detailing of the exterior and has also retained the original floor plan.
Cultural-historical description
The first design of the institutional building, of a total of 6 proposals is dated 1 September 1867. The caption for this drawing reads: 'Design for a nursery and primary school, home for elderly men and women and orphanage, including master's residence and a convent for eight to ten religious sisters in the R.C. parish of Soest'. There are three proposals made on this date, all consisting of a floor plan and drawing of the elevation. These proposals were not executed. The fourth proposal is dated 4 February 1868. The caption for this reads: 'Design for the construction of an institution for the R.C. Nursery School, home for elderly men and women and a convent for the Religious sisters in the R.C. parish of Soest, Archdiocese of Utrecht'. This design was also not executed. The fifth proposal is not dated and concerns only an elevation drawing. The front facade shows the institution as it now stands in Soest. The side facades are, however, much longer, seventeen bays in total and shows that this is a floor plan based on the previously mentioned proposals, in which among other things a chapel, a school and a home for elderly men and women are included. In the middle of the floor plan a cloister garden with ambulatory is designed.
The sixth proposal builds further on the fifth proposal and is dated March 1868 and has as caption: 'Elevation drawing of the St. Josefgesticht for the R.C. parish of Soest, Province of Utrecht. The front facade is identical to the fifth proposal but the side facades are now reduced to half the length behind which a building volume of one storey is placed under a hipped roof. At a later stage Bleys extended the side facades with three bays and created a second storey, whereby the side facades ultimately acquired a symmetrical arrangement. No drawings of this have been found.
