Inleiding

Introduction

This block-shaped DWELLING HOUSE is located in the centre of Franeker, on the north side of the inner canal, approximately midway along the E. Eisingastraat. The dwelling house has its front facade oriented to the south. Due to the segmental arch-shaped extension on the first storey, it sits approximately 1 metre beyond the building line. The building is the result of the conversion of an older building, for which a conversion permit was granted in May 1912 to Mr Johannes W. Lunter in Franeker. The designer and executor of the conversion plan was architect Nicolaas J. Adema (1860-1946) from Franeker. In the period around 1900 to 1910 the architect designed in the decorative architectural style of Art Nouveau. A good example of this is the residential block Molenpôlle from 1909, Zuiderkade 2, 3 and 4. For this dwelling house the architect made less use of decorative elements as far as the exterior is concerned; the interior, by contrast, which architect Adema usually also took care of, was as decorative as in his earlier designs. Here, therefore, we are rather dealing with Transitional Architecture with the application of Art Nouveau elements. The interior also qualifies for protection at national level.

In spring 1994 the front facade was refurbished.

Description

The dwelling house has a rectangular floor plan, is two storeys high, with above it a high attic storey. It is built of white facing brick and brown bricks on the front facade. Yellow bricks probably reused from the demolition of the previous building were used for the rear facade. Natural stone was used for the plinth. The hipped roof is covered with black glazed Dutch tiles. The front facade is divided by three pilasters into two unequal sections: on the right the section with the entrance and to the left of it the section with the segmental arch bay window. The pilasters are built of facing brick.

The spandrels are finished with a combined moulding of dentil and saw-tooth pattern. Above this is a moulded frieze with a cross motif in white facing bricks. The main cornice rests on seven flat blocks. On the roof slope above the front facade a wooden, tall and narrow roof dormer is placed with a gabled roof and moulded list (wind board). The roof of the dormer lies in the same plane as the main roof. The dormer has casement windows with three-pane fanlights. The front door, above two natural stone steps, is flanked by the pilasters (of white facing brick and brown brick). It is a varnished wooden door with carved work in the style of Art Nouveau. In the middle of the upper part there is a round window marked at the bottom by a wooden semicircular list, in which the letterbox opening is located. In the rectangular fanlight there is leaded glass. This consists of rectangular panes with in the centre a large rose window. The arched course above the fanlight is flanked by two corner stones. The lock is original. Above the front door, on the second storey, is an H-window with leaded glass in the fanlight and course above. The natural stone plinth supports the semicircular bay window with a natural stone rounded sub-lintel. The bay window consists of six narrow H-windows with fanlight. The fanlights contain leaded glass with a two-light window motif. Above this, on the second storey, is a very low balustrade with a clover-leaf-like motif. On the second storey a three-part window consisting of three H-windows, of which the centre window is twice as wide as the side windows; leaded glass in the fanlights. In the original drawing by architect Adema two single-pane windows with fanlights were drawn here. Above the window a moulded course. The side facades are not visible because the building is virtually directly adjacent to the neighbouring buildings.

The rear facade is built of yellow brick. On the first storey is a large new single-pane shop window with fanlight; next to it the built-out storage area consisting of two small rooms. The front part of it, adjoining the house, has been provided with a new roof. In the rear part is the door opening. Above the extension the profile of a window opening with arch is visible. The opening is blocked. On the second storey are three single-pane windows with three-pane fanlights of yellow frosted glass.

The INTERIOR layout is original, as is most of the interior elements (all doors, for example, are original). The narrow hall with draught lobby is fitted throughout to the ceiling with original tiling (with acorn motif). The tiles almost certainly came from the Van Hulst factory in Harlingen. The wainscot part is yellow-green, the upper part off-white. In both the motifs are in the form of an X - of four acorns and four oak leaves - incorporated. The ceiling is decorated with floral decorations of papier-mâché. The original floor tiling with acorn and oak leaf motif, in green and off-white, is still present throughout the hall. Hall and corridor are separated by a draught door. In the upper part of it is frosted glass with leaf motifs. The staircase is original. The wooden handrail and stairpost are also designed in the style of Art Nouveau. The leaning rail of the staircase above the X-shaped motif (four oak leaves pointing towards each other) is repeated. Under the stairs is the original wooden panelled door to the room beneath. The two wooden doors to the left of the hall provide access to the interconnecting rooms. The doors, with carved work in the style of Art Nouveau, have in the upper part an oval pane with leaded glass.

Remarkable interior elements in the rooms include: the sliding doors with papier-mâché surround between front and rear room, in which floral garlands (festoons) are incorporated in the architrave and rosettes in the capital-like parts. The painted ceiling in the front room, with floral motifs, was executed by painter Zijlstra, a well-known figure in Franeker at the time, who according to oral tradition was maintained by the church wardens. The letters AMDG are placed in the corners. The letters mean: AD MAIOREM DEI GLORIAM (To the greater glory of God). The ceiling in the middle room has been repainted. In the rooms are also the original marble fireplaces with tiling; in the front room the fireplace is of black marble, in the middle room of light beige marble. From the hall (and now also from the conservatory) the kitchen can be entered, which is tiled throughout its entire height with original white and blue tiles. From the kitchen the storage area is accessible, where originally the toilet for the staff was located. Fuel was also stored here. The layout of the second storey is original: the corridor, the original doors to four bedrooms, where among other things the original painted ceilings on linen, windows and cupboards are found. The bathroom has been renovated. The attic is partly still original and partly converted into bedrooms. Here are still old wooden shelves where apples and the fruit from the 72 fruit trees that once stood in the large garden were stored, and the servant's room with cupboard and bed alcove.
