Inleiding
Voormalig SCHOOLGEBOUW (bewaarschool) dat thans een woonfunctie heeft. Het blokje ligt aan een vierkant hofje, dat omsloten wordt door drie oudere bouwonderdelen -uit de 18de eeuw- van het Vrouwengasthuis te Franeker. De hof is te betreden via een 18de-eeuwse poort, nr. 27, ( met links nrs. 11, 12, 14 en 16; rechts nrs. 20, 22, 24 en 26; en vooraan nr. 27 en 28). Het voormalige schoolgebouw is rond 1885 gebouwd, in een decoratieve Traditioneel-ambachtelijke bouwstijl. Het INTERIEUR is volledig aangepast aan de woonfunctie en komt niet in aanmerking voor bescherming van rijkswege. De drie oudere bouwwerken en de toegangspoort van het Vrouwengasthuis zijn al Rijksmonument en staan geregistreerd onder nr. 15716.
Omschrijving
De voormalige bewaarschool heeft in hoofdvorm een rechthoekige plattegrond, is verdiepingloos en wordt gedekt door een samengesteld afgeknot dak met zwarte, ruitvormige daktegels. Het gebouw is opgetrokken uit bezande bruine baksteen, en verlevendigd met banden van witte kalkzandsteen. Rondom loopt een uitgemetselde plint van witte kalkzandsteen. Voor de decoratie van het fries zijn gele en oranje/rode strengpersbakstenen gebruikt. De voorgevel is symmetrisch opgebouwd en bestaat uit twee bouwdelen met afgesnoten hoeken en een even terugspringend middendeel. In de afgesnoten hoeken bevinden zich de ingangen van de huidige wooneenheden, bestaande uit houten deuren met bovenlicht onder halfronde boog van witte kalkzandsteen met trommelveld met blauw-witte tegeltjes. Natuurstenen stoepjes. De voorgevel wordt geleed door drie twee aan twee gekoppelde (vernieuwde) T-vensters met enkelruits bovenlicht onder gebogen strekken van kalkzandsteen met boogtrommels met wit-blauwe tegeltjes. De tegeltjes zijn indertijd vermoedelijk vervaardigd bij aardewerkfabriek Van Hulst te Harlingen. De achtergevel is blind.
Waardering
Het voormalige schoolgebouw aan het Nieuwe Hof 18 en 19 is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch belang:
- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en sociale ontwikkeling;

Description
Introduction
Former SCHOOL BUILDING (infant school) which now has a residential function. The small building is situated on a square courtyard, which is enclosed by three older building components -from the 18th century- of the Vrouwengasthuis in Franeker. The courtyard is accessed via an 18th-century gate, no. 27, (with on the left nos. 11, 12, 14 and 16; on the right nos. 20, 22, 24 and 26; and at the front no. 27 and 28). The former school building was constructed around 1885, in a decorative Traditional-craft building style. The INTERIOR has been completely adapted for residential use and is not eligible for protection at national level. The three older buildings and the access gate of the Vrouwengasthuis are already a national monument and are registered under no. 15716.
Description
The former infant school has a mainly rectangular floor plan, is single-storey and is covered by a composite truncated roof with black, diamond-shaped roof tiles. The building is constructed of sanded brown brick, and enlivened with bands of white artificial stone. A rendered plinth of white artificial stone runs all around. Yellow and orange/red pressed bricks have been used for the decoration of the frieze. The front facade is symmetrically composed and consists of two building sections with cut-off corners and a central section set back evenly. In the cut-off corners are the entrances to the current residential units, consisting of wooden doors with fanlight under a semicircular arch of white artificial stone with drum field with blue-white tiles. Natural stone doorsteps. The front facade is articulated by three pairs of (renewed) T-windows with single-light fanlight under curved stretchers of artificial stone with arch drums with blue-white tiles. These tiles were presumably made at the Van Hulst earthenware factory in Harlingen. The rear facade is blind.
Valuation
The former school building at Nieuwe Hof 18 and 19 is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:
