Inleiding
Stichting Op Toutenburg is in 1895 gebouwd als GASTHUIS voor ouden van dagen en ook nu nog herbergt het gebouw 20 bejaardenwoningen. Het gebouw is opgetrokken in een Neo-Renaissance-stijl, naar het ontwerp van Hendrik Hendriks Kramer (1850-1934) die van 1878 tot 1934 architect te Leeuwarden was. De stichter van Toutenburg was Mr. Age Looxma Ypey, eigenaar en bewoner van het tegenover gelegen Vijversburg. Na zijn overlijden in 1892 is bij zijn testament de Stichting Op Toutenburg opgericht die uit de nalatenschap het gasthuis liet bouwen ter nagedachtenis aan de ouders van Age.
Het gebouw ligt op een rechthoekig omgracht terrein tegenover het huis Vijversburg (RM) aan de oostzijde van de zuid-noord lopende weg naar Tytsjerk. Aan de achterzijde loopt evenwijdig aan het pand een lange rechte beukenlaan. Dit is waarschijnlijk het restant van de tuinaanleg van het oude slot Toutenburg (1525) dat tot 1856 op deze plaats heeft gestaan. Achter de laan ligt een grote door bomen omzoomde moestuin, oorspronkelijk in gebruik bij de bewoners van Toutenburg, tegenwoordig beheerd door een volkstuinvereniging. Twee gemetselde DAMMEN in de gracht geven toegang tot het voorterrein van Toutenburg; de rechterdam is nieuw aangelegd op de oorspronkelijke plaats, geflankeerd door twee hoge lindebomen; op de linker dam staat een smeed- en gietijzeren HEK.
De voordeuren van de woningen zijn vernieuwd. Het gebouw is aan de achterzijde uitgebreid met een aanbouw onder lessenaarsdak, en losstaande schuurtjes in 1970-1980; aanbouw en schuurtjes vallen buiten de bescherming.
Omschrijving
Het langwerpige pand is opgetrokken in bruine baksteen met sierbanden van gele kalkzandsteen in één bouwlaag onder een samengesteld zadeldak gedekt met zwarte Friese golfpannen; rondom een geprofileerde gootlijst op klampen. In het dakschild 18 kleine kajuiten onder uitkragend schild-zadeldak gedekt met daktegels; piron op de nok.
De symmetrisch ingedeelde voorgevel heeft twee midden- en twee hoekrisalieten met trapgevels met natuurstenen aanzetstenen en dekplaten. Op de centrale trapgevels staat een natuurstenen rondboog fronton waarop een sierbol; op de andere trapgevels natuurstenen leeuwen met wapens van de families Looxma en Ypey, en daaronder, in de top, een natuurstenen masker. De dubbele verdiepingsvensters met dubbel bovenlicht in de trapgevels staan onder rondboogstrekken met natuurstenen sluitstenen in de vorm van een vrouwenkopje; in de boogtrommel siermetselwerk van gele kalkzandsteen en bruine baksteen.
De woningen hebben allen zesruits schuifvensters met blinden en (nieuwe) deuren met bovenlicht onder segmentboog strekken; onder de vensterpartijen ronde, met gietijzeren roosters afgesloten ventilatiegaten. In het terugliggende deel tussen beide centrale trapgevels is een natuurstenen lijst op dito consoles op goothoogte, met daarop een rechthoekige gevelsteen, die is afgewerkt met pilasters, een hoofdgestel met rondboogfronton, piron en sierbollen; op het tympaan een wapen onder een kroon en hoornen des overvloeds in reliëf; aan weerszijden van de gevelsteen klauwstukken en natuurstenen siervazen. Het opschrift van de gevelsteen is: "Stichting Op Toutenburg ingesteld op testament van Mr. Age Looxma Ypey, overl. op Vijversburg onder Rijperkerk 8 aug. 1892, ter nagedachtenis van zijne moeder vrouwe Baudina Looxma, overl. aldaar 14 juni 1880, wed. van Dr. Nicolaas Ypey, overl. aldaar 12 sept. 1869." Onder de gevelsteen is tussen de bovenlichten van de twee centrale entree-partijen een kleine natuurstenen cartouche met daarop de tekst: `Geopend 1895'.
Aan de achterzijde eveneens vier risalieten met trapgevels zonder natuurstenen decoraties en met ezelsruggen op de trappen. De rest van de achtergevel is nagenoeg geheel oversneden door de recente uitbreiding.
De twee DAMMEN in de gracht zijn gemetseld; Op de linker dam staat een smeedijzeren HEK met de naam Toutenburg tussen gietijzeren gecanneleerde kolommetjes met siervaasjes. Aan de buitenzijde van de kolommen smeedijzeren vleugelstukken met voluutdecoraties.
Waardering
Het gasthuis met bijbehorende dam en hek van de Stichting Op Toutenburg uit 1895 te Tytjerk is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch van belang:
- vanwege de Neo-Renaissance bouwstijl in een evenwichtig, symmetrisch ontwerp;
- vanwege de detaillering van de ornamentiek;

Introduction
The Toutenburg Foundation was built in 1895 as a HOSPICE for the elderly and it still houses 20 elderly dwellings today. The building is constructed in a Neo-Renaissance style, after the design of Hendrik Hendriks Kramer (1850-1934) who was an architect in Leeuwarden from 1878 to 1934. The founder of Toutenburg was Mr. Age Looxma Ypey, owner and resident of the opposite Vijversburg. The building is located on a rectangular moated site opposite the house Vijversburg (RM) on the east side of the south-north running road to Tytsjerk. On the rear side runs parallel to the building a long straight beech-lined avenue. This is probably the remnant of the garden layout of the old castle Toutenburg (1525) which stood on this site until 1856. Behind the avenue lies a large vegetable garden lined with trees, originally in use by the residents of Toutenburg, nowadays managed by an allotment association. Two brick DAMS in the moat give access to the forecourt of Toutenburg; the right dam is newly laid on the original site, flanked by two tall lime trees; on the left dam stands a wrought and cast iron GATE.
The front doors of the dwellings have been renewed. The building has been extended at the rear with an outbuilding under roof structure, and separate sheds in 1970-1980; outbuilding and sheds fall outside protection.
Description
The elongated building is constructed in brown brick with ornamental bands of yellow calcareous sandstone in one storey under a composite gabled roof covered with black Frisian roof tiles; around it a profiled cornice on clamps. In the roof truss 18 small cupolas under projecting hipped-gabled roof covered with roof tiles; ridge piece on the ridge.
The symmetrically arranged front facade has two central and two corner risalites with stepped gables with natural stone cornerstones and coping stones. On the central stepped gables stands a natural stone round-arch pediment with an ornamental ball; on the other stepped gables natural stone lions with coats of arms of the families Looxma and Ypey, and below, at the top, a natural stone mask. The double storey windows with double fanlight in the stepped gables stand under round-arch lintels with natural stone closing stones in the form of a female head; in the arch drum decorative brickwork of yellow calcareous sandstone and brown brick.
The dwellings all have six-pane sash windows with blinds and (new) doors with fanlight under segmental arch lintels; below the window arrangements round ventilation openings closed with cast iron grilles. In the recessed section between both central stepped gables is a natural stone band on similar consoles at gutter height, with on it a rectangular facade stone, which is finished with pilasters, an entablature with round-arch pediment, ridge piece and ornamental balls; on the tympanum a coat of arms under a crown and cornucopias in relief; on either side of the facade stone claw pieces and natural stone ornamental vases. The inscription on the facade stone is: "Toutenburg Foundation established by the will of Mr. Age Looxma Ypey, died at Vijversburg under Rijperkerk 8 Aug. 1892, in memory of his mother Mrs. Baudina Looxma, died there 14 June 1880, widow of Dr. Nicolaas Ypey, died there 12 Sept. 1869." Below the facade stone is between the fanlights of the two central entrance sections a small natural stone cartouche with on it the text: 'Opened 1895'.
On the rear side likewise four risalites with stepped gables without natural stone decorations and with saddle backs on the stairs. The rest of the rear facade is almost entirely obscured by the recent extension.
The two DAMS in the moat are brick built; On the left dam stands a wrought iron GATE with the name Toutenburg between cast iron fluted small columns with ornamental vases. On the outside of the columns wrought iron wing pieces with volute decorations.
Valuation
The hospice with associated dam and gate of the Toutenburg Foundation from 1895 at Tytjerk is of general cultural historical and architectural historical importance:
