Inleiding

Introduction

Former PARSONAGE with adjoining CONSISTORY, belonging to the Dutch Reformed Church which is already protected by the state (monument number 35867). The parsonage was built at the instigation of the Dutch Reformed parish under the architecture of W. Reitsema from Leens. The building was completed in 1938 on the site of an older parsonage from 1867. A nineteenth-century GATE separating the parsonage garden from the street dates from the period of the old parsonage. The iron gate has two moveable sections and consists of cast-iron pillars and wrought-iron rails and stiles with iron points as finial. The main pillars bear a pine cone. The parsonage is prominently situated on an old sand ridge beside the Dutch Reformed Church and has on the rear side a ditch which continues further as a drainage channel. A striking row of linden trees separates the parsonage grounds from the church grounds on the north side and on the south side an old stone wall forms the boundary. The building is now private property.

Description

The PARSONAGE erected in a cubistic expressionistic style has red-brown brick facades on a stone frame of hard clinkers reaching to the underside of the windows. The building consists of various building blocks, some one and some two storeys high, under a complex flat roof, on which bitumen with gravel (originally mastic). The blocks are separated from each other by slightly higher-built chimneys. On the front (west side) is a building block with a roof terrace, accessible via opening doors. Around the roof terrace runs a built parapet supported on alternate pairs of ceramic rollers. In the stone frame of this building block concrete brackets are fitted on which rests a wooden window box with zinc container. The windows are predominantly horizontally oriented. The front facade has in total three large horizontal windows, of which the one in the facade section with roof terrace has on either side a narrow vertical window with leaded glass. Two small square leaded glass windows mark the large window on the upper floor. The south facade has three large windows of which two have leaded glass sidelights. The rear facade (east side) has two large leaded glass windows with sidelights and a small square leaded glass window, indicating the position of the toilet. On the rear also two tall windows marking the kitchen; below these two cellar windows. Above this kitchen section is a flat roof with behind it a facade section with three leaded glass windows increasing in height. The north facade has a large window with sidelight on the ground floor, and on the upper floor another one with three small square leaded glass windows alongside. On this side is also the main entrance. This consists of a porch with concrete canopy topped with a sphere, two wooden doors with three leaded glass panes in them and a brick step with concrete top. One door provides access to the residence, the other to the service entrance. The porch is closed on the side with a steel nine-pane "wind screen". The north facade has a flat, single-storey extension on a rectangular floor plan, which originally housed the CONSISTORY with storage and a hallway with scullery. A tall double wooden door provides access on the west side to the consistory. In the side facade (north) four high-placed square windows with on the rear a larger square window. The access door to the scullery is on the rear in an extended facade section. Two iron nine-pane windows mark the side facade (south) of the scullery. The partly cellared residence has a largely well-preserved INTERIOR with the original layout. In particular the staircase in the hallway with Art Deco motifs and the geometrically constructed mantels in the rooms are noteworthy.

Valuation

Parsonage with gate of general importance on account of cultural and architectural-historical value - as an example of a parsonage from 1938 with a nineteenth-century gate - as a good representative of the oeuvre of architect W. Reitsema from Leens - on account of the striking cubistic design - on account of the relatively high degree of integrity of the exterior of parsonage and gate - on account of the completely well-preserved layout of the interior of the parsonage - on account of the functional and spatial-visual relationship with the adjacent church - on account of the fine location on the old sand ridge
