Inleiding

- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een technische en typologische ontwikkeling;

- vanwege de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, in vergelijking tot de overige ontwerpen van transformatorgebouwen, met name binnen de provinciale grenzen;

- vanwege de samenhang tussen exterieur- en (nieuwe) interieuronderdelen en de functie;

- vanwege de situering, verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de streek;

- vanwege de in grote mate aanwezig architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur;

- vanwege de functionele en typologische zeldzaamheid.

Introduction

The TRANSFORMER BUILDING (Low Voltage Distribution Installation, LSVI) at Vrouwenparochie is located north of the Middelweg and oriented towards the south. It stands on a narrow plot between the road on the southern side, a wooden gate of an adjacent business on the eastern side and pasture on the northern and western sides. It was built in 1916, in Transitional style, on commission of the Provincial Electricity Company in Friesland. The PEB was established in 1916 as successor to the municipal electricity generating stations. The first transformer buildings date from the last decade of the previous century and were housed in high sheet-iron columns. Only after 1910 were many of these columns replaced by brick structures. This design probably comes from the PEB's own drawing office. This LSVI supplied - and still supplies - the surrounding agricultural businesses with electricity. The machines have been modernised; these fall outside national monument protection due to their insufficient age.

Description

The transformer building has an L-shaped floor plan and is one storey high. It is built of brick, plastered and painted in white and grey (the plinth). It is covered by a composite roof (hipped roof and pavilion roof) of red Dutch tiles, with a thin wooden roof edge resting on narrow pegs. On the pavilion roof stands a large square wooden crown with pavilion roof, into which the ventilation duct opens. On the ridge of the hipped roof a red ornamental ball has been placed. The building consists of two spaces separated by a wall: one for low voltage (beneath the hipped roof) and one for high voltage (beneath the pavilion roof). The steel doors with concrete lintels are located in the south-east corner, beneath the sloping section of the pavilion roof which rests on one side on a large triangular thin console. The doors have recently been replaced with new ones due to updated safety regulations. In the front, rear and western side facades are respectively three, two-by-two and three vertical windows; only the windows in the front facade still have the original glass tiles. At the bottom of each facade are two ventilation grilles. The eastern facade and part of the northern facade are obscured from view by the adjacent business.

Evaluation

The transformer building at Vrouwenparochie is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:

- as a distinctive expression of a technical and typological development;

- for the aesthetic qualities of the design, in comparison to other transformer building designs, particularly within the provincial borders;

- for the coherence between exterior and (new) interior components and the function;

- for its siting, connected with the development of the region;

- for the largely present architectural integrity of the exterior;

- for its functional and typological rarity.
