Inleiding

Introduction

With the development of recreation, recreational houses were built from the first decade of this century. In the nineteen-thirties, recreational houses were built in notably large numbers, both on the mainland and on the islands (attractive and peaceful natural areas). The RECREATION HOUSE at Nes on Ameland, called Canidunum, is a particularly striking example of this. What is notable in this case is the exceptional and unique organic building form of the property. The dwelling is located at the edge of the village of Nes, to its north-west, in the dune area the "Honnedunen". The name of the summer residence is derived from this dune area: "Canidunum" = canis + dunum; canis means 'dog' in Latin, dunum means 'dune'. However, according to the owner, the name means "bird resting in the dune". The property faces east with its front facade and is situated on fairly spacious grounds, surrounded by copses. The grounds slope steeply downward on the west side, both in relation to the dwelling and the road that runs past it. The recreation house was most probably built in 1935 (the blueprints date from August 1934 and November 1934) by architect Tj. Venstra from Dokkum, municipal architect of Ameland, commissioned by Dr. H.J. Leopold from Apeldoorn. The contractor was P. Mosterman, from Nes on Ameland. The property is constructed in wood, the building material par excellence for this type of dwelling. The building style incorporates elements of English Country House style and Interbellum architecture.

Description

The dwelling has an irregular, elongated floor plan and is composed of rectangular and curved building forms. The property is one storey high and is covered by a large thatched roof with roof ridges. The roof has an organic form, reminiscent of a large fish. The sloping and almost undulating downward-running ridge and the chimney accentuate the organic nature of the form. The large roof seems to give solidity to the irregular floor plan shape. On the roof slope at the front a semi-circular roof dormer has been installed. The dwelling is constructed in wood and rests on a plinth of upright red sintered bricks. The plinth is higher on the rear side, as the ground slopes away here. The front facade, facing east, recesses twice to the right of the entrance; on the south side the facade follows a curved line, extending to the fairly straight southern side facade. In the front facade a six-step wooden staircase with wooden handrail and wooden door with three-pane fanlight leads to the door of the covered veranda. This was originally open, but was fitted with windows during the Second World War, which came from demolished summer houses. The wooden door is divided into six panes. The veranda is lit all around by chained four-pane windows in the middle (added later) and six-pane windows on the side, which extend beneath the overhanging thatched roof. The windows follow the angular facade lines, which are positioned here according to a rounded, broken line. On the northern corner, from the front facade towards the side facade, two six-pane windows are positioned. Against the northern side facade and under the same roof the wooden shed is built on. Here, on the east side, there is a wooden door. The roof extends like a truncated tail over the shed section. The rear facade steps forward in the middle; here there are three six-pane windows. To the right of the middle section is a rectangular terrace, to the left two four-pane windows. On the corner of the terrace towards the southern side facade two six-pane windows. The terrace railing is interrupted to allow access to the terrace. The door to the living section is located beneath the covered veranda. The door is semi-circular and divided into six panes in the upper part. The original solid brass knocker is mounted on the right jamb. To the left of the door is a row of windows extending towards the side facade, positioned according to a curved line and behind which is the living room. Immediately to the left of the door is a garden door, which provides direct access from the room to the veranda. To the right of the door a smaller curved window row, behind which is the dining room. The layout of the INTERIOR is original, as are most of the interior components. In the dining room - to the right of the hall - the original woodwork of large rectangular panels is present, which has been used for both the walls and the ceiling and the cupboards. As a divider between the dining kitchen and the kitchen, sliding doors with transparent leaded glass are used. In the room to the left of the hall, the original ceiling is present among other things, and some furnishings. From the hall, the basement can be entered via a small staircase downward. At the back of the hall there is a door to the toilet and between the dining room door and the basement door a door to a large bedroom. All doors on this floor are original. On the storey beneath the high roof there are two bedrooms. Here, among other things, the original doors, ceilings, and wall panelling (boards approximately 20 cm.) are still present.
