Inleiding

Introduction

The RECREATION COTTAGE "Somero" is one of many recreational dwellings that were built especially in the 1930s on Ameland and the other islands of the Wadden Sea. The construction of these dwellings is indicative of the cultural, social and socio-economic shifts that took place at that time. "Somero" is situated on the southern side of the Zwarteweg, which leads eastward to the beach and borders the southern edge of the Vossenbos. The recreation cottage faces south-southeast and is located on a spacious, trapezoidal plot surrounded by fairly high wooded shrubbery. The dwelling, which was built in 1944, was constructed in a traditional building style, which is actually typical of the recreation dwellings from the nineteen-thirties, incorporating elements of the interwar architecture style. The building material consists of wood for the walls and reed for the roof. On the island of Ameland, most roofs of the recreation dwellings are covered with reed. The architect remains unknown to this day; the contractor was P. Mosterman from Nes, Ameland.

The exterior of the property merits protection at national level. Although the interior is largely original in its layout and retains some original elements, such as certain doors and ceilings, it is not so exceptional as to merit protection at national level.

Description

The recreation dwelling Somero has a rectangular ground plan, formed by the T-shaped residential section and the adjoining square-shaped wooden veranda. Against the rear facade (the short side of the rectangle) a rectangular shed is positioned with its short side. The recreation dwelling is covered by a truncated hipped roof with two half-hipped ends. The roof is covered with reed and crowned by a brick chimney with a rectangular flue opening on each side. The roof ridge consists of reed ridge pieces. In the roof slopes above the side gables there are two slightly curved windows with two four-paned windows. Below the half-hipped end on the northern side there are two double windows with four-paned glazing bars. The roof section above the veranda is supported by four square wooden posts. The rear facade and the side gables up to the beginning of the veranda are built of rough, impregnated and lime-washed wooden planks; the front facade and the recessed part of the side gables consist of painted wooden planks. The residential section and veranda stand on brick piers. The wooden veranda is bordered by a wooden rail, which consists of three wide planks. The rail is interrupted at the front (before the wide garden doors) and on the west side (beside the front door).

In the front facade there is a wide double six-paned garden door with six-paned sidelights. In the wooden top of the front facade, below the half-hipped end, there is a horizontally positioned window consisting of four four-paned windows. In the western side gable there is, from left to right: a horizontally positioned rectangular window consisting of four four-paned windows; in the recess, or recessed gable section, there is the wooden six-paned front door; further to the right in the side gable there is a double wooden garden door with six-paned doors and four-paned sidelights. The upper panes thereof are larger than the rest to align with the same line height as the top line of the upper horizontal glazing bars of the garden doors.

In the eastern side gable there are, from right to left: a horizontally positioned window consisting of three four-paned windows; in the recessed section of the side gable there is a double six-paned window.

Perpendicular to the rear facade, slightly asymmetrical, the wooden shed is positioned, covered by a reed gabled roof with large, rounded reed ridge pieces. In the western gable of this shed there is a wooden door with a horizontally positioned pane in the upper section, in the northern gable there are a four-paned window and a single-paned window. In the rear gable, to the left of the small shed, there is a six-paned window and in the top two small single-paned windows.
