Inleiding
Het dijkMAGAZIJN is in 1860 opgetrokken in opdracht van het Hoogheemraadschap Lekdijk Benedendams en IJsseldam. Het gebouw is binnendijks opgetrokken op een kleiheuvel die een restant vormt van een batterij van de vesting Schoonhoven. Aan de Lekdijk bij de Lagedijk in IJsselstein staat een soortgelijk magazijn. In het gebouw waren de materialen opgeslagen die bij hoog water werden gebruikt.
Omschrijving
Het binnendijks aan de Lekdijk op een kleiheuvel gelegen vrijstaande dijkmagazijn bestaat uit één bouwlaag op een rechthoekige plattegrond onder een zadeldak met de nokrichting evenwijdig aan de weg. De dakbedekking bestaat uit rode Hollandse pannen. De gevels zijn voorzien van muurankers. De voorgevel (zuidgevel) heeft een op de middenas geplaatste dubbele deur onder een korfboogvormige ontlastingsboog. In de zijgevels zijn onder strekken rechthoekige houten roosters geplaatst in de vorm van persiennes. De achtergevel is blind.
Waardering
Het object is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als vrij zeldzaam voorbeeld van een dijkmagazijn uit omstreeks 1860, dat tevens waterstaatkundig van belang is als onderdeel uit de geschiedenis van de waterbeheersing. Ook heeft het ensemblewaarde vanwege de vrij en beeldbepalende ligging aan de Lekdijk.

The dike MAGAZINE was built in 1860 on the orders of the High Water Board Lekdijk Benedendams and IJsseldam. The building is built within the dike on a clay hill which is a remnant of a battery of the fortress Schoonhoven. A similar magazine stands at the Lekdijk at the Lagedijk in IJsselstein. The materials stored in the building were used during high water.
Description
The detached dike magazine located within the dike at the Lekdijk on a clay hill consists of one storey on a rectangular plan under a gabled roof with the ridge direction parallel to the road. The roof covering consists of red Dutch tiles. The facades are provided with wall anchors. The front facade (south facade) has a double door placed on the central axis under a basket-arch relieving arch. In the side facades rectangular wooden grilles are placed under spans in the form of venetian blinds. The rear facade is blind.
Assessment
The object is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as a fairly rare example of a dike magazine from around 1860, which is also important from a waterworks perspective as a component in the history of water management. It also has ensemble value because of its prominent and visually dominant location at the Lekdijk.
