Inleiding

Introduction

The FARM 'August's Hoeve' was built in 1903/1904 on the instructions of jhr. Augustinus Frederik Carel Graswinckel. Graswinckel wished to place a manor house as a summer residence on the dyke. The building was only permitted to be constructed if a farm was built alongside it. Thus the MANOR FARM was created, with the residential building having the character of a villa in the tradition of transitional architecture with elements of chalet style and neo-renaissance. Behind it is located the stable section. It is thereby one of the few buildings on the Lekdijk that has two storeys. The two storeys offer a view of the river Lek situated on the other side of the dyke.

Description

The farm situated behind the Lekdijk is constructed on a T-shaped floor plan. The building consists of two building volumes: the front house and the stable section. The facades of grey brick have a cemented plinth. The front house has two storeys and an asymmetrical layout. The front facade is enlivened with stone bands, ornamental brickwork below the roof line and quoins in the courses above windows and doors. The profiled gutter rests on wooden blocks. The roofing of the front house consists of covered interlocking tiles. The front facade (south facade) has five window bays. The T-sash windows are partly altered. The projecting left section is a two-bay pointed gable, covered with a gabled roof, the ridge direction of which is perpendicular to the dyke. The first storey contains two windows, the second storey has opening balcony doors with sidelights and a three-pane fanlight. For this a balcony is set on brackets with a wooden, decoratively executed, balustrade. The top gable contains a sash window. The roof line under the wind braces is executed in openwork and is crowned by a ornamental finial. The right section is three window units wide lengthwise facade, covered by a hipped roof with the ridge direction parallel to the dyke. On the first storey on the left is an entrance portico with a double door with fanlight. On the right the facade contains two windows. The second storey contains three windows. The left and right side facades have identical facade divisions with two windows in both storeys. Against the nearly blank rear facade is placed the stable section, consisting of one storey under a gabled roof. The bays are provided with cast-iron windows with tracery under segmental arches. The right side facade contains an entrance with three stable windows to its right. The rear facade is a symmetrically arranged pointed gable with in the centre under a segmental arch a double carriage door with windows, flanked by a stable window and a dung door. In the central axis above the carriage door is a hay door and a ventilation flap. On either side of it in the gable top is a cast-iron grill window placed. The interior layout of the farm is nearly original. The front house contains among other things a hall with a large staircase.

Valuation

The farm is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural historical value by virtue of its creation history whereby the special combination has been created of a residential building with the character of a villa with an associated traditional stable section. The farm executed in the early 20th century in the tradition of transitional architecture is intact as regards main form and detailing of both exterior and interior. Furthermore the farm has ensemble value by virtue of its prominent location on the Lekdijk.
