Inleiding

Introduction

STATION, built in 1912 by K.J.Kamphuis to replace the old station. The railway line from Kampen to Zwolle-Utrecht was put into operation in 1868 and operated by the Nederlandsche Centraal Spoorwegmaatschappij. In 1912 the railway line was shortened by several tens of metres and the old Kampen station was replaced by a new station. In terms of building style, this station represents the transition from a traditional to a more businesslike, stricter formal design.

The station building consists of a passenger station and a goods station and also contains the dwelling of the station master.

The station is located virtually directly on the IJssel, opposite the Kampen town centre, next to the IJsselbrug. The elongated volume, with a tower-like section as a termination, emphasizes the course of the track, parallel to the IJssel. The entrance has been renewed; the interior is largely original.

Description

Elongated building volume constructed in red machine-made brick under a combined, slightly projecting roof with concrete tiles. The facades are decorated with horizontal bands and beneath the roof edge by short vertical strips of yellow facing brick. The windows have multi-pane fanlights and stand beneath natural stone lintels. The station has a centrally located, projecting entrance section marked by two towers with tent roofs and finials; beneath the roof edge a segmental arch frieze. Between the towers a canopy supported on cast-iron corbels and a platform. On either side of the -renewed- entrance are broad window sections placed in the recessed facade sections. To the right of these a building section with two storeys, with a tower on the corner under a tent roof with finial. Beneath the roof edge of the tower a segmental arch frieze. Further in this building section window sections on the ground floor and first floor; a dormer under a mansard roof with weatherboarding and a window breaks through the roof line.

The left part of the station building is reserved for goods handling; the roof slope runs lower here, supported by wooden trusses. In front of the facade a platform with large loading doors beneath multi-pane fanlights behind it. The left side facade contains a window. The right side facade has a wooden extension under a lean-to roof in which windows with fanlights are placed.

In the rear facade of the station on the track side various window sections and a renewed entrance. Here too in the building section with two storeys a dormer, as on the front facade.

The track covering consists of a gabled roof supported on cast-iron columns and corbels.

In the INTERIOR the station hall contains the original draught porch with glass doors beneath multi-pane fanlights. Ceiling with wooden cornice supported by wooden corbels. The former ticket windows are closed, but the wooden framework with multi-pane fanlights is still visible.

Valuation

Station of general cultural, architectural and urban planning importance:

- as an expression of regional and local railway history

- because of the relationship between design and urban planning location

- because of the exceptional appearance with three towers for stations in Overijssel

- because of the reasonably high degree of integrity of the interior

- because of the high degree of integrity of the exterior
