Inleiding
Huize Welgelegen, vroeger Villa Agatha geheten, werd rond 1905 gebouwd. De architect is onbekend. Een opvallend stijlverwantschap is te herkennen in het raadhuis van Baarn aan de Laanstraat 1. Welgelegen is gelegen aan de Emmalaan, tegenover de rond 1897 aangelegde Wilhelminavijver. Deze vormt het hart van het Wilhelminapark, één van de eerste villaparken in Baarn. Het pand is eclectisch van karakter vanwege de toepassing van verschillende bouwstijlen, zoals de chalet stijl, de Art Nouveaustijl, het neo romaans en de neo Hanzegotiek.
Omschrijving
De op de hoek van de Emmalaan en de Anna Pauwlonalaan gelegen VILLA is op een samengestelde plattegrond opgetrokken en telt twee bouwlagen onder een samengesteld schilddak, gedekt met rode tuile du Nordpannen. De gevels zijn opgetrokken boven een vooruitstekende, deels witgeschilderde plint. Het belangrijkste aanzicht van de villa wordt gevormd door de gevels aan de Emmalaan en de Anna Pauwlonalaan. Deze worden op de hoeken elk gekenmerkt door een torentje, terwijl de gevels tevens van trapgevelbeëindigingen voorzien zijn. Boven de vensters zijn hardstenen lateien en bakstenen boogstrekken aangebracht met verdiepte velden. De vensters zijn voorts voorzien van persiennes. De noordgevel aan de Emmalaan bestaat uit een risalerend geveldeel van twee vensterassen rechts, dat afgesloten wordt door een trapgevel in neo-Hanzegotiek. De topgevel is voorzien van pinakelachtige bekroningen. De linkerhoek van de gevel wordt geaccentueerd door een torenachtige verhoging, waarboven een geschoorde, ver uitstekende daklijst met een met beverstaartpannen gedekte spits. Een windwijzer vormt van dit dak de bekroning. Alle zijden van de spits zijn voorzien van een driehoekig dakkapelletje. Het dakschild tussen toren en risaliet wordt doorbroken door een dakkapel onder een zadeldakje met chaletachtige decoraties.
Tegen de westgevel aan de Anna Pauwlonalaan is een stenen erker gezet met boven de deur- en vensterpartij gekoppelde ontlastingsbogen. Het dak doet dienst als balkon. Rechts van de erker is een venstertravee breed geveldeel als trapgevel opgetrokken. Daarnaast bevindt zich op de hoek met de achtergevel een torenachtige verhoging. De derde bouwlaag ervan is open en als rondboogloggia met gemetseld balkon uitgevoerd. De toren heeft een bekroning met kantelen. De zuidgevel heeft rechts een naar voren springend risaliet. De gevels bevatten een aantal schuifvensters. Aan deze zijde bevinden zich ook openslaande deuren naar een terras met een bakstenen balustrade op een hardstenen plint. Tegen de oostgevel is een aanbouw gezet die buiten de bescherming valt. Rechts bevindt zich de toren. Links daarvan bevindt zich een asymmetrische topgevel. In dit geveldeel zijn glas-in-lood vensters aangebracht ten behoeve van het trappenhuis.
De indeling van het pand is grotendeels oorspronkelijk. De hal bevat een schouw en lambrizering alsmede een trappenhuis met glas-in-lood vensters. Op verschillende plaatsen is een stucplafond aanwezig met florale motieven. Het toilet is voorzien van een oorspronkelijke tegelwand. Op zolder is een takelinstallatie aangebracht, waaraan een personenlift is bevestigd die de hal en de eerste verdieping met elkaar verbindt.
Voor de gevel aan de Emmalaan bevindt zich een dubbele oprijlaan en een grasveld. Het perceel is omheind met een gieijzeren hek.
Waardering

The VILLA situated on the corner of the Emmalaan and the Anna Pauwlonalaan is constructed on a composite plan and comprises two storeys beneath a composite hipped roof, covered with red tuile du Nord tiles. The facades are constructed above a projecting plint, partially painted white. The principal aspect of the villa is formed by the facades on the Emmalaan and the Anna Pauwlonalaan. These are each characterised at the corners by a turret, while the facades are furthermore provided with stepped gable terminations. Above the windows are stone lintels and brick arches with recessed panels. The windows are furthermore provided with persiennes. The north facade on the Emmalaan consists of a projecting facade section of two window bays to the right, which is closed off by a stepped gable in neo-Hanseatic Gothic. The gable end is furnished with pinnacle-like cresting. The left corner of the facade is emphasised by a tower-like projection, above which a braced, far projecting roof line with a pike covered with beaver-tail tiles. A weathervane forms the cresting of this roof. All sides of the pike are provided with a triangular gable dormer. The roof panel between tower and projection is broken by a dormer beneath a saddle roof with chalet-like decorations.
Against the west facade on the Anna Pauwlonalaan is set a stone oriel with coupled relieving arches above the door and window section. The roof serves as a balcony. To the right of the oriel is a facade section as wide as a window bay constructed as a stepped gable. Beside it, on the corner with the rear facade, is a tower-like projection. Its third storey is open and executed as a round-arch loggia with masonry balcony. The tower has a cresting with crenellations. The south facade has a projecting projection to the right. The layout of the building is largely original. The hall contains a fireplace and wainscoting as well as a staircase with leaded glass windows. In various places there is a stucco ceiling with floral motifs. The toilet is furnished with an original tiled wall. In the attic is a pulley installation, to which a passenger lift is attached which connects the hall and the first floor.
Before the facade on the Emmalaan is a double approach drive and a lawn. The plot is fenced with a cast-iron fence.
