Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The BOLLENSCHUUR was built in 1925 on the instructions of P. van Reisen by contractor Kiebert from Sassenheim. The bollenschuur consists of a shed section with a single-storey extension attached to it, in which the storage facilities and office were originally housed.
It is the third shed of the four that the family business had erected along the Loosterweg. Of these sheds, a dwelling house with shed from 1885 still remains, which stand to the south of the bollenschuur and on the opposite side of the road a shed from 1928. These two sheds and the dwelling house are currently no longer part of the business and have been substantially altered.
After the war (in 1958, 1968 and 1989) business premises were built onto the north side of the bollenschuur. In the facades of the shed so-called drying doors were installed; these are double doors with which ventilation in the shed was regulated, so that the bulbs could dry with the help of natural heat. The drying doors in the south and west facade were replaced in 1989 by solid hardwood examples, which however still have the original design. In the extension some window openings have been altered.
The shed was equipped in 1925 with, among other things, an electrical installation, a lift and 6000 square metres of shelving. A large number of components from this interior are still present. The lift was later moved and replaced.
The bollenschuur stands on the east side of the Loosterweg, with the gable end facing the road. On the rear of the shed a harbour was dug, which is accessible via a ditch and made it possible to transport the bulbs by boat from the fields to the shed. On both gable ends the name of the business is displayed: P. van Reisen & Zonen.
In the period 1850-1940 large-scale commercial cultivation and trade in flower bulbs developed. The bollenschuur played an important role in the cultivation process; the bulbs were dried, cooled, peeled and packed there.
From around 1900, besides the single-storey wooden bollenschuren with gabled roofs, brick sheds of several storeys under flat roof were erected.
The shed in Voorhout is an example of this. In addition, the combination of bollenschuur and dwelling house in one building mass occurred and more attention was paid to the design of the building.
Description
Bollenschuur built on a rectangular plan, consisting of three storeys under a flat roof covered with mastic and gravel. Along the entire south side a single-storey extension, under a flat roof covered with asphalt paper. The overhanging wooden gutter rests on brackets. The brick facades are articulated horizontally by decorative mortar courses with air vents above the drying doors of the shed. The drying doors are square-headed and have, like the windows in the extension, wooden frames and drip mouldings. Each door is fitted with four panes.
The facade arrangement of the shed is symmetrical: both gable ends have three and both side facades fourteen window bays.
The front facade (west): above the closed wall surface of the ground floor on the first and second storeys three drying doors, of which the middle drying doors are wider. At roof height the facade is furnished with two square corner pilasters with a stepped coping. Between these pilasters under the eaves a painted white frieze is applied, with the company name in black letters.
On the right side is the west facade of the extension, which is also furnished with two corner pilasters on the roof. In this facade a new window has been installed.
The side facade (south) of the extension consists of, from left to right, two new windows (the left window originally consisted of three panes with a door on the right), a door, a four-pane window, a wooden sliding door, a double wooden door, a window and two composite windows, each consisting of four casement windows with horizontal glazing bars. Above the extension the first and second storeys of the shed each have fourteen drying doors.
The rear facade (east) of the shed is identical to the front facade, with the exception of the ground floor, which has a drying door on the left and right (the middle drying door is bricked up).
On the left, in the rear facade of the extension, a double wooden door, each door having four panes.
The side facade (north) is identical to the side facade on the south side; up to the first storey the business premises from 1958 has been built against it.
Interior: virtually intact, including the shelving, which forms the load-bearing structure of the shed. On the ground floor behind the front facade is a cooling room with extra insulated walls and next to it a room with a humid climate: the so-called hollow or drilling room. Furthermore, in the interior the ventilation flaps as part of the vertical ventilation are still present, as well as the original panel and sliding doors. At the rear of the building are the remains of a winch, which was used to unload the bulbs from the ships that moored just behind the shed.
Valuation
The bollenschuur is of general cultural-historical importance as a representative example of a large shed directed at factory-style processing of bulbs and as part of the (economic) development of bulb cultivation, both regionally and nationally.
The bollenschuur is of general architectural-historical importance because of the high degree of integrity in main form, use of materials and detailing of both the interior and exterior (particularly the presence of the original shelving) and because of the characteristic architecture of a large bollenschuur built after 1905, recognisable among other things by the corner pilasters, the symmetrical arrangement of the facades, the large company name displayed and the separate extension housing the storage facilities and office.
The bollenschuur is of urban planning importance because of its striking location in the flat landscape, because of its location on the one hand by the road and on the other by the ditches, of importance because of the transport of bulbs by land and water, and as part of a series of bollenschuren along the Loosterweg.
The bollenschuur is of general importance as an intact and therefore rare object from the history of bulb cultivation.
