Waardering

Introduction

Description

Former country retreat for trainee priests situated on a hillside: building on rectangular plan at the height of two storeys plus attic storey, the whole surrounded by a veranda with half-hipped roof resting on tapered wooden posts on natural stone plinths, the posts connected at the top by wooden open-work arched infills, on the rear side the half-hipped roof is provided in the middle with a wooden pediment in which a round-arch motif. The veranda has seven bays on the long sides, four on the short sides and rests on the left side (=west) on a brick substructure consisting of eight niches. Veranda floor of yellow and black tiles. The facades on the ground floor are articulated with profiled windows, doors and niches (one with painting of Saul and David). Above the half-hipped roof of the veranda a continuous frieze of round arches. The facades of the storey are of wood (painted white), the articulation with coupled windows dates from 1999. Hipped roof covered with red tiles, on the ridge ends a ridge tile. Internally amongst others kitchen with beam ceiling and sink in Namur stone, storey floor on tapered main and secondary beams on blocks; chapel with paintings from 1941 by trainee priest Cor van Geleuken and stained glass; original door surrounds, panelled doors. On the storey the old structure was retained, as was the original roof truss structure.

Valuation

The recreation building for trainee priests dating from 1904, named "Emmaus", is of general significance because: it is older than fifty years; "Emmaus" has a distinctive architectural appearance which within the history of Dutch architecture can be regarded as rare; the building has been preserved intact both externally and internally, which is evident amongst others from constructions, principal form, articulation, paintings with biblical themes and detailing; remarkable cultural-historical significance lies in the phenomenon of "recreational country retreat for trainee priests", being a rare and characteristic building commission from the beginning of the twentieth century. "Emmaus" provides on the basis of its structures in combination with the secluded location a remarkable diverse and coherent spectrum of historical experience and comprehension moments.

The octagonal toilet building is of general significance because of: - the age; - the distinctive appearance, to which ornamental value is attributed; - the intact principal form and construction; - the historical and functional relationship with "Emmaus"; - the significance for the history of sanitation.
