Omschrijving

HISTORISCHE PARKAANLEG. In 1832 richt tuinarchitect J.D.

Description

HISTORIC PARK LAYOUT. The Frederikspark lies between the city and the Haarlemmerhout. The layering of the park has come about from the Middle Ages when it already served a recreational purpose as a playing field; what remains of this is the historic structure (seventeenth century) consisting of the rectangular, originally completely open terrain enclosed by the Dreef, Baan and Kleine Houtweg. In 1832 landscape architect J.D. Zocher junior developed the site as a cake market and walking park, basing himself on the design carried out (1809-1810) by his father, J.D. Zocher sr. who on the commission of Louis Napoleon realised a landscape-style layout with an egg-shaped ground pattern, paths, small meadows and copses running in generous curves. In 1862 the firm J.D. and L.P. Zocher drew up a design for a villa park, using the already existing park and ground pattern for the inclusion of villas. The villa park was conceived as a unity (nature and culture) in which an architectural space was created by means of natural and structural means. The simple layout of the villa park is characterised by spacious villa plots around a central oval space which is developed as parkland and a public circuit path. The oval forms the heart of the spatial composition, creates space and brings together the views both inward and outward centrally. From the north-westerly direction (Houtplein) a sightline runs towards the open central part of the park. The villas are separated by green walls and all have a free view over the central lawn; two villas also have a clear orientation towards the outside, towards the Dreef. The Frederikspark is presently (1999) in poor condition, moreover the expansion of the provincial building and the widening of the traffic road, whereby one of the villas has come to be isolated, form a disturbance. However, the essential components of the park namely the ring-shaped path around the open central terrain, as well as the arrangement of the villas situated in the greenery around it have been preserved.

Valuation

HISTORIC PARK LAYOUT of general importance: - because of the recreational purpose that has applied from the fourteenth century; - as one of the earliest examples of a nineteenth-century urban and villa park; - as the first and only villa park of the landscape architect J.D. Zocher junior in Haarlem; - because of the development of the area from public playing field (De Baan) to public walking park (De Koekamp) to villa park (the Frederikspark); - because of the small-scale layout and simple design principles namely villas in a rural setting grouped around an open central space; - because of the strong relationship of the park with the urban planning situation (surrounding facade walls); - because of the functional-spatial relationship of the different components of the park.
