Introduction

Brick DWELLING HOUSE, dating substantially from the mid-sixteenth century. The property is located in the protected townscape of Gorinchem in a prominent urban planning position, on the boundary between the old town and the expansion. Together with the adjoining property built at the same time on the corner and the property on the opposite side of the street, "'t Comt al van Godt" it forms the eastern entrance to the city.

Description

The property consists of ground floor, first floor and attic floor with loft space. Originally the property consisted of a front and rear house. The property underwent thorough restoration in 1997-1999. In the course of this work it was decided to remove the non-original render from the facade. The cornice-topped facade that replaced an original closure from the construction period, however, was retained during restoration. The front facade is constructed of red brick with relieving arches above the windows, fitted with partially original sandstone setting and closing stones. On the ground floor, to the left above two hardstone steps is the entrance to the neighbouring property at number 29. This construction resulted from a re-separation of the properties at numbers 29 and 31, which had once been combined. The shop window next to the entrance dates from 1932. The first floor has three sash windows with glazing bars, the attic floor has two. Above the first floor and the attic floor are ornamental wall anchors. The facade is completed by a nineteenth-century cornice-topped facade with simple cornice. The rear facade is constructed of brick and has relieving arches above the timber windows, ornamental wall anchors and interlacing in the spout gable. The walls, beam floors and roof date largely from the sixteenth century. The layout on the ground floor, apart from the staircase to the upper floor, has been completely removed. Of the original ceiling painting of the rear house, adorned with various stencils, a number of details have been preserved.

Valuation

The DWELLING HOUSE at Burgstraat 31 is of general importance because of its architectural and building historical value as an example of an originally sixteenth-century dwelling house, with a relatively well-preserved construction from the sixteenth century and some rare interior elements such as the ceiling paintings in the rear house. The property moreover possesses situational value because of its location on the former eastern boundary of the historic core of Gorinchem and ensemble value with the adjoining property Burgstraat 33.
