Omschrijving

Description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Huis te Vogelenzang. A historic garden and park layout in landscape style, partly preserved intact in structure and partly in detail, probably designed by the German garden architect Michael, incorporating older formal elements. In the early 19th century, presumably J.D. Zocher sr. further naturalized the layout. The layout is oriented towards the house, which by its elevated position forms a characteristic element. The front of the layout (east) has an arcadian character formed by a large meadow with groups of trees, rhododendrons and a few solitary specimens. From the house, which is surrounded by lime trees with lime-tree seats, a wide view over this landscape towards the village of Vogelenzang. Along the meadow, in the early nineteenth century a new drive was laid out from the Bekslaan, which provides access to the country estate. The western section of the Bekslaan, planted with beeches, is the oldest element of the layout (sixteenth-century) together with the moated grounds of Teylingerbosch, which is accessed by the Kleine Bekslaan (seventeenth-century). On either side of these lanes are meadows furnished with solitary trees and tree groups. The vistas of the Kleine Bekslaan, planted with oaks (originally planted with elms), are somewhat obscured by shrub planting. On the north side of Teylingerbosch are the utility gardens, partly within and partly outside the moat, consisting of a walled kitchen garden and orchard. The south side of the Bekslaan adjoins the park woodland. In contrast to the open layout to the east and north of the house, the rear of the layout has the enclosed character of a park woodland. The structure is supported by the straight sight-line, the curved water feature and the house as 'point de vue'. Because the layout decreases in height towards the rear, a view is obtained from the house over the said axis and water feature. The eighteenth-century axis, called 'kijklaan', lies in line with the house and ends on a high dune, the so-called kijkduin. The sight-line was originally planted only with oaks, but now also has growth of lime trees and beeches. The end of the axis has become somewhat unclear due to tree regrowth. The lane is crossed before its end by a dune ditch, from which a semicircular shaped lane runs. Halfway along the north side is a mound as a remnant of an ice house. South of the axis is a park woodland with meandering paths and open spaces, including a rectangular plot of arable land, which is completely surrounded by ditches. Directly south of the house, enclosed by the woodland, is a rose garden from the nineteenth century (19th century), which was restored around 1995. The layout has a circular ground plan with rose beds on lawns and a path pattern in the form of a wheel with spokes. Diagonally behind the rose garden is the eighteenth-century kitchen garden, which is divided in two by a lane of fruit trees. North of the central axis is a former coppice woodland with a meandering beech lane. From this lane a sight-line is projected across a meadow towards a small farmhouse.

Valuation

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Huis te Vogelenzang of general importance: - because of the layout in landscape style, partly preserved intact in structure and partly in detail, with remnants of the formal layout (lanes, watercourses), of the early landscape style from the late 18th century (watercourses, some paths) and of the landscape style from the early nineteenth century (meadow in front of the house); - because of the 18th-century 'kijklaan'; - because of its importance for the history of garden and landscape architecture; - because of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
