Omschrijving

HOOFDGEBOUW (HUIS WISCH).

- wegens de ouderdom;

- wegens de architectonische vormgeving en de L-vormige plattegrond van het representatieve hoofdgebouw en de dienstvleugel;

- wegens de gaafheid van het exterieur;

- wegens de functioneel-ruimtelijke relatie met de andere onderdelen van de buitenplaats;

Description

MAIN BUILDING (HUIS WISCH). Huis Wisch is built on an L-shaped plan and consists of an originally 15th-century round tower that was heightened in the course of the 17th century. On the north side of it the main building dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. On the east side of the tower the service wing from circa 1700, 90 metres long, which is terminated by a heavy square tower. During the Second World War the house was severely damaged during an Allied air raid, causing much of it to be destroyed. In 1951 the owner of the house, Mrs O.M.I. Vegelin van Claerbergen-Jonkvrouwe van Schuylenburch, began the restoration of the eastern part of the long service wing and in 1960-1962 the restoration of the main building followed under the direction of architect Canneman. This restoration of the castle meant the restoration of the old main forms of the house. Since there were hardly any constructive and decorative elements left in the house, much of the interior was replaced. The original window arrangement was maintained during the restoration. The square tower is a brick building with basement on a square plan. The tower is two storeys high and is covered by a tent roof. Cross windows are placed in the north, east and south facades, the lower windows of which are provided with shutters. The long service wing on a rectangular plan is one storey high and is covered by a gabled roof with grey tiles. In the wing multilight windows (following 18th-century example), access doors and garage doors are alternated in an irregular way. The service wing is terminated by the round tower originally dating from the 15th century, which was heightened with a storey in the 17th century. Against the tower a hexagonal stair tower was built which was replaced in the course of the 19th century and was replaced again during the restoration after the Second World War. Between the round tower and the main house a gallery with an entrance was built during the restoration. The main house consisting of two storeys, partly with basement (date stone 1648), is built on a rectangular plan and is covered by a composite gabled roof with grey tiles. In the front, side and back facades there are multilight sash windows (following 18th-century example), which were installed during the restoration after the Second World War. On the rear side of both the long and the short wing there is a terrace provided with a balustrade.

Valuation

The MAIN BUILDING belonging to the historic country estate Wisch is of general importance:

- because of its age;

- because of the architectural design and the L-shaped plan of the representative main building and the service wing;

- because of the integrity of the exterior;

- because of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate;

- because of the characteristic location within the landscape-style park layout from the fourth quarter of the 19th century situated within a structure that arose between the end of the 17th century and the first decades of the 19th century.
