Inleiding

Introduction

White VILLA with square corner towers and double service building, situated diagonally in an extensive garden at the corner of Donkerelaan and Brederodelaan. The villa was built in 1871 on behalf of Mrs C.E. van Valkenburg-Teding van Berkhout according to a design by A. van der Steur. In 1916 the villa was extended, notably in the north-western corner, with a building volume matching the style, of which the aforementioned corner towers and a narrow projecting gable at the western side form part. The eclectic building style of the property as it appeared in 1916 can be considered as derived from the so-called "Italian villa with tower", of which the irregular main form in combination with tower, gently sloping gabled roofs and neo-classical decoration are the most important characteristics.

The villa was originally called "Villa Franca", in 1916 "Marialust" and subsequently "Castagnola". The villa, now divided into two dwellings, currently bears no name (1994). The northern side of the villa falls under number 2, the southern side under number 4. The western half of the service building situated at the north-eastern corner has number 4A.

The garden is accessed from the public road via three entrances, each marked by low whitewashed square piers with square capping. These piers also fall under the protection.

Description

Villa built on an almost rectangular ground plan consisting of ground floor, first floor and attic storey under a roof composed of gabled roofs with overhangs and gentle roof slopes. On the ground plan there are several building masses. On the western side - with the ridge line more or less parallel to Brederodelaan - there is a broad building mass under a gently sloping gabled roof. This is the front of the villa. At right angles to the rear (E) of this western building mass stand two building masses of unequal width each with a pointed gable. These two building masses are separated from each other by a narrow flat-roofed building mass.

The walls are built of whitewashed brickwork on a grey-painted plinth. The windows are all of wood, mostly T-shaped and fitted with sash windows or casement windows. Many windows have blinds. The doors to balconies and platforms mostly have double hinged doors (terrace doors). The balustrades of the balconies and platforms consist of iron railings between wall piers upon which flat iron ornamental vases stand. The composed roof is zinc-clad with guttering. The overhangs with the cornice lines rest on the bearing timbers. The pavilion roof of the tower has slate in Dutch bond, crowned by a lead finial. Each of the four roof slopes of the pavilion roof of the tower has a small roof dormer. The cornice line of the pavilion roof rests on consoles.

Of the predominantly neo-classical decoration, the vertical elements are mainly formed by pilaster strips at the corners and the horizontal elements by double string courses at the height of the first-floor slab. Neo-classical are furthermore, among others, the string courses and the cresting above windows and doors. These crestings have the form of stuccoed mouldings on consoles. The relief of the facades is also formed by broad horizontal bands below the cornice lines and by reveal panels in the various facades.

The western side (front) has a narrow (aforementioned) projecting element with gable ending with a small roof coping. The single window bay of this projecting element contains at ground floor and first floor a narrow window and at the height of the attic storey a round-headed window of the same width. The facade section to the left (N) of the projecting element is two window bays wide and has across its entire width a balcony resting on four square piers which is accessed via the terrace doors of the first floor. The leftmost window bay forms the width of the tower. This tower has at the height of the second floor two narrow, side-by-side placed, round-headed windows. To the right (S) of the projecting element is the part of the west facade dating from 1871. This is a broad facade section of three window bays. The ground floor has two coupled five-sided conservatories. These conservatories date from after the original building period but already existed at the time of the 1916 extension (cadastre). The conservatories have wooden frames with leaded glass in the fanlights and are partly covered by roof slopes with mastic. Above each conservatory is a small platform with balustrade which is accessed via the terrace doors in the two outer window bays on the first floor.

The northern side has to the right (W) the tower with a width of one window bay, in which on both the ground floor and first floor there is a large window and at the height of the second floor two narrow side-by-side placed round-headed windows. The facade surface to the left (E) of the tower has on the ground floor a projection with above it a platform with balustrade. The chimney placed on the eastern corner is a later addition which falls outside the protection.

The eastern side has on the left (S) a broad symmetrically divided building mass with pointed gable and a width of three window bays. The middle window bay contains the main entrance. This axis forms a narrow projecting element. Above the main entrance is a balcony resting on two posts which is entered via terrace doors on the first floor. The gable top is overhanging and furnished with a narrow arched window. Separated by the aforementioned flat-roofed building mass with the width of one window bay, to the right (N) stands a building mass with a width of two window bays. This building mass has a pointed gable with an arched window in the top.

On the southern side is located to the left (west) the projecting gable end of the western building mass. This side forms a pointed gable with the width of one window bay with a window at the height of the ground floor, first floor and attic storey. The window of the attic storey has a tapering double frame which was installed in 1955 to replace a narrower arched window. The remaining part of the south side is set back. This facade surface contains two broad window bays in which terrace doors are located on the ground floor. On the first floor only the westernmost window bay has a sash window. The eastern one is blank.

The service buildings built against the north-eastern corner of the villa stand next to and against each other and contain three pairs of double doors for horses and carriages, directly opening onto Donkerelaan. The left (lower) service building (S) dates, like the villa, from 1871. The right service building was added here later, but before 1921 (cadastre). The first floor of this right building was enlarged at the rear in 1923.

The service buildings each stand on a rectangular ground plan with the ridge lines of the overhanging pantile-clad gabled roofs at right angles to Donkerelaan. The left service building (S) consists of ground floor with loft, originally respectively for coach house and hayloft. The left service building has one pair of double doors with above it in the gable top a double transport door. This service building is narrower than the right service building (N) which has two pairs of double doors and which consists of ground floor, first floor and loft, originally respectively for coach house, stable and on the first floor located coachman's dwelling. The front facade of the first floor is set back so that above the double hinged doors there is a roof terrace. Both buildings are built of whitewashed brickwork on a cream-coloured plinth. The right building has at the front in the plasterwork imitated pointing. The gable tops are clad with vertical boarding which is pointed at the underside. Where the wind braces meet at the top there is freely-hanging wooden ornamental work.

The garden is accessed from the public road via three entrances, each marked by low whitewashed square piers with square capping.

Valuation

The villa with attached service buildings and entrance piers is of general interest from a cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective as a representative example of individual eclectic villa construction, which from the third quarter of the 19th century - preceding the development of villa parks - emerged in the nature-rich areas outside the Bloemendaal village centres. The villa is also of importance because of its striking urban planning situation.
