Inleiding
OPHAALBRUG van het Hollandse type, genaamd 'Constabelbrug', daterend uit 1922 en uitgevoerd naar het ontwerp van de machinefabriek en constructiewerkplaats Gebr. Klinkenberg n.v. te Wormerveer-Holland. De Constabelbrug vormt een verbinding tussen de Spuistraat en de Bult en overspant de Nieuwe Haven. De Constabelbrug is beeldbepalend gelegen in het beschermde stadsgezicht van Edam en is een van de reeks ijzeren bruggen die de Nieuwe Haven overspannen.
Omschrijving
Enkele ijzeren ophaalbrug, met handbediening door middel van een handlier met rechte heugel in de westelijke hameistijl. Het val is samengesteld uit houten dwarsliggers met wegtapijt op stalen hoofdliggers met onderwindverband, rustend op gemetselde landhoofden. De doorvaartbreedte is 6,60 meter, de doorrijbreedte 4 meter. De zich naar boven toe verjongende hameistijlen van gedeeltelijk geklonken delen en gedeeltelijk vakwerk, staan in beton verankerd met schroefboutverbinding op het noordelijk landhoofd. Aan de binnenzijde van de westelijke hameistijl is een plaatje bevestigd met de tekst: 'Gebr. Klinkenberg/Constructiewerkplaats/Wormerveer'. De hameiregel is geconstrueerd uit een dubbele vakwerkregel, horizontaal verbonden door bovenwindverband. Op het decoratieve, met schroefboutverbinding aan de hameistijlen bevestigde, vulstuk, bestaande uit vakwerk en vleugelvormige stukken met ronde opening, is aan beide zijden in het midden een plaat bevestigd met de naam 'Constabelbrug'. De balans bestaat uit volwandige geklonken balanspriemen met verstijvingsribben en ballastkist aan de noordzijde. Het bovenwindverband is ruitvormig met dwarsstang. De hangstangen eindigen in een stalen voetstuk, verbonden met de hoofdliggers. Het val wordt aan weerszijden geflankeerd door een ijzeren hek. De spijlen zijn tussen ijzeren leuningen gevat. De bovenste leuning eindigt boogvormig. Aan de zuidzijde staat op het landhoofd aan weerszijden een hek waarvan de vulling tussen de stangen is bevestigd met schroefboutverbinding.
Waardering
De Constabelbrug is van algemeen belang wegens cultuurhistorische, typologische en historisch-constructieve waarde als gaaf bewaard gebleven voorbeeld van een enkele ijzeren ophaalbrug met handbediening door middel van een handlier met rechte heugel van het Hollandse type uit de eerste helft van de 20ste eeuw. BASCULE BRIDGE of the Dutch type, called 'Constabelbrug', dating from 1922 and executed to the design of the engineering works and construction workshop Gebr. Klinkenberg n.v. in Wormerveer-Holland. Description
Single iron bascule bridge, with manual operation by means of a hand winch with straight counterweight. The deck is composed of wooden cross-beams with road surface on steel main beams with bottom wind bracing, resting on masonry abutments. The navigation width is 6.60 metres, the roadway width 4 metres. The counterweight arms tapering towards the top, consisting of partly riveted components and partly lattice work, are anchored in concrete with screw-bolt connection on the northern abutment. On the inner side of the western counterweight arm is a plate attached with the text: 'Gebr. Klinkenberg/Constructiewerkplaats/Wormerveer'. The counterweight beam is constructed from a double lattice beam, horizontally connected by top wind bracing. On the decorative infill piece, attached to the counterweight arms with screw-bolt connection, consisting of lattice work and wing-shaped pieces with round opening, a plate is attached on both sides in the middle with the name 'Constabelbrug'.
