Inleiding
Hotel-Café-Restaurant 'De Prins'. Markant aan de haven en binnen het beschermde gezicht Makkum gelegen overwegend laat-18de/vroeg-19de-eeuws gebouw, dat met name wordt beschermd vanwege de aanwezigheid in de gelagkamer van een bijzonder waardevolle en unieke tegelwand met schepentableaus. De tableaus zijn omstreeks 1790 gemaakt door de Amsterdamse tegelschilder Adam Sybel (Amsterdam ca. 1743 - Makkum 1803), die was verbonden aan de in 1783 opgerichte tegelfabriek van reder, olieslager en koopman Hylke Jans Kingma. Sybel heeft ook gewerkt voor de bekende, nog steeds bestaande aardewerkfabriek van Tichelaar te Makkum.
Omschrijving
Vrij diep gebouw, opgetrokken uit (deels gepleisterde) rode baksteen, twee bouwlagen hoog en gedekt door een afgeknot met blauwe pannen belegd schilddak. De gevels zijn vrij regelmatig ingedeeld door vensters van verschillende afmeting en detaillering. In het INTERIEUR is met name van belang de tegelwand met 12 schepentableaus. Met uitzondering van het statenjacht, dat twee keer voorkomt, verschillen alle schepen van elkaar. De tableaus zijn uitgevoerd in blauw beschilderde tegels en zijn, als waren het schilderijen, ingewerkt in een ondergrond van witte tegels; langs de onder- en bovenkant van de wand en om de deuropening heen loopt een sierrrand van eveneens blauw beschilderde tegels.

Hotel-Café-Restaurant 'De Prins'. Striking in its position at the harbour and within the protected townscape of Makkum, this predominantly late 18th/early 19th-century building is protected in particular because of the presence in the bar-room of an exceptionally valuable and unique tile wall with ship tableaux. The tableaux were made around 1790 by Amsterdam tile painter Adam Sybel (Amsterdam c. 1743 - Makkum 1803), who was connected to the tile factory established in 1783 by merchant, oil-presser and shipper Hylke Jans Kingma. Sybel also worked for the well-known pottery factory of Tichelaar at Makkum, which still exists today.
Description
Relatively deep building, constructed of (partly plastered) red brick, two storeys high and covered by a hipped roof with truncated hip, clad with blue tiles. The façades are laid out fairly regularly with windows of various sizes and detailing. In the INTERIOR, the tile wall with 12 ship tableaux is particularly noteworthy. With the exception of the state yacht, which appears twice, all ships differ from one another. The tableaux are executed in blue-painted tiles and are incorporated, as if they were paintings, into a ground of white tiles; along the lower and upper edge of the wall and around the doorway runs a decorative border of equally blue-painted tiles.
