Omschrijving

Description

Symmetrically arranged three-aisle CHURCH BUILDING with five-sided choir on the southwest side and with square tower against the northeast side of the nave. The masonry is executed on the exterior in red brick, divided vertically by various series of buttresses, pointed arch window openings and spandrels. The front of the church (NE) is dominated by the centrally placed tower with high octagonal spire provided on four sides with a clock. The masonry of the tower also has vertical articulation, among other things through buttresses placed at the corners, pointed arch windows above the centrally placed main entrance and on the storey, series of pointed spandrels and sound holes. The tower is flanked by low chapels, the left chapel (SE) being the baptismal chapel. These chapels are in turn flanked by volumes placed under tent roofs in which the left and right entrances are situated.

The tower spire, like the gabled roof of the church and the various hipped roofs of the roofing above ancillary spaces and roof dormers, is covered with slate in Maas-pattern covering.

The nave has a length of six bays. The side aisles each have a large pointed arch window in each bay, the clerestory has a series of three coupled pointed arch windows in each bay. These pointed arch windows have iron armatures with non-figurative stained glass.

On the interior the masonry is mainly executed in whitish-grey and anthracite-coloured ashlar, alternating with yellow and red brick in horizontal articulation. The structure of the masonry is, however, vertical and is formed among other things by the arcades and the small columns. The arcades have composite piers where in the bases use is made of a strip of hardstone and in the capitals of sandstone.

Sandstone is also found in the capital-shaped transition between the small columns and the springing of the transverse arches. The pointed barrel vault above the nave consists of boarding between mortared transverse arches. The side aisles have four-part cross-ribbed vaults, with vault sections in yellow brick. The spanning of the transverse arches has straining arches at the springing of the vault. To the left (SE) of the choir is the sacristy, containing among other things the original woodwork with letter-panel decoration.

The church interior still contains various original works of art such as the high altar and the two altars of the side aisles, polychrome sculptures, the font and the church organ on the northeast side under a high pointed vault in the tower body there is a three-sided wooden organ gallery on corbels for the use of the choir, accessible via a sandstone spiral staircase.

Valuation

The church is of general importance due to architectural and cultural-historical and situational value and as a historically-functional principal component of the St. Lambertus complex.
