Inleiding

Introduction

A detached MEETINGHOUSE, located in the centre of Hippolytushoef, situated along a narrow lane. According to the foundation stone on the facade, the church dates from 1861. The small windows in the front facade have wrought-iron bars from the 1950s. The church is separated from the street by a front garden with a wrought-iron fence as boundary fence. The organ dates from the second half of the 19th century.

N.B. The extension on the rear facade is not protected.

Description

A church building constructed on a rectangular ground plan with a depth of five bays and a height of one storey under a gabled roof, sunk between two gable ends, covered with flat Frisian tiles. The roof ridge runs perpendicular to Vermaningssteeg. The original wooden roof truss structure with vertical boarding and iron Polonceau trusses remains intact.

The masonry is built in brown brick, partly plastered, above a raised plinth. Unless otherwise stated, the window bays contain a pointed-arch window with blunt point, wooden frame with stiles and cross-timbers, and stained-glass windows. The windows (of the nave) rest on a continuous drip moulding.

The plastered front facade (W) is fitted with deep cut joints, imitating ashlar. The facade has a projecting central section with the entrance, consisting of a heavy wooden double door, and above it a large window. The central section is crowned by a roof-ridge pinnacle. Next to the entrance is a hard stone memorial stone bearing the text "Ao 1861 4 Sept. Is de eerste Steen van dit Gebouw gelegd Door Nicolaas Pott Lz. Kleinzoon des Leeraars". On either side of the central section there is on the ground floor a window bay with a small window with blunt pointed arch and iron bars. Above these windows is a drip moulding, which continues across the side facades and rear facade. The front facade is finished with a stepped frieze in the form of a dentil course. The ridge tiles are covered with zinc.

The right side facade (S) has a width of five window bays, each with a window. The windows rest on the aforementioned drip moulding. The facade is finished with a gutter, originally a wooden gutter, on iron gutter clamps.

The left side facade (N) has the same structure and layout as the right side facade. Only the raised plinth on this side is fitted with a plaster layer.

The rear facade (E) is blind. Rod anchors are visible at various points in the masonry. The facade is finished with wind vanes and a ridge tile, covered with zinc.

The interior is largely intact. On the west side of the church, at the entrance, there is a vestibule with a depth of one bay. After entering, there are on either side of a corridor a small room, and on the north side there is also access to the gallery. The organ on the gallery is also protected. The organ woodwork is fitted with neo-Gothic motifs, such as the three-cusped arches and double pointed arches in the balustrade and pinnacles on the top. Furthermore, the interior contains the original panelled doors, wooden church pews and the hexagonal wooden pulpit with tester.

The boundary fence consists of a wrought-iron fence with spikes. The gateway piers of the fence are crowned with pineapples.

Appraisal

The church building with attached fencing is of general importance from a cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective as a well-preserved example of a Mennonite Meetinghouse from the second half of the 19th century in the North Holland countryside.
