Omschrijving
Omschrijving

Description
Description
The two single bascule bridges, built primarily in riveted iron H-profile, each span a width of 8.26 metres. The bridge decks or leaves, approximately 3.5 metres wide, are bounded by wooden railings fastened to wrought-iron T-profiles. The bascule frame or bascule assembly and the pivot point of the bridge on the Delft side of the lock rest on the Delft quay; the other identical but heavier bridge stands and pivots on the lock-side. Both bascule frames, approximately 6.50 metres high, are closed by an iron lattice girder. The H-profiles of the 12.30 metre long balance taper towards both ends. The cross-connections between the constituent components are formed from the counterweight (balance beam) towards the lift side (boom) by a heavy solid H-profile, lighter lattice girders and finally a round iron rod. Furthermore, crossed tie-rods are positioned between the bascule uprights to ensure rigidity. The connections between the balance and the leaf are formed by wrought-iron chains. The bridges are raised by means of hand-operated hoisting mechanisms, each mounted in round drums on the bascule frame, with which a quadrant attached to the bridge deck is rotated in an upward or downward direction. The forces occurring in the bascule assembly are caught on either side by two outward-facing round tie-rods or braces anchored in the quay. When the bridge is open, the interrupted bank connection is secured by double horizontally rotating lattice gates executed in T-profile.
Assessment
The two bascule bridges of the lock complex are of general importance because of their cultural-historical value as representative and reasonably well-preserved examples of characteristic nineteenth-century iron bascule bridges by the firm Meijer from Musselkanaal. The bridges are furthermore of general importance because of their architectural-historical value due to the reasonable degree of integrity in main form, material use and detailing. The bridges are of considerable urban planning importance as part of the lock complex, the main component of the protected village character of Leidschendam.
