Inleiding
Gebouw, opgetrokken in 1883 tegen een ouder bouwdeel, oorspronkelijk fungerend als smederij van L.W.R. Schütz, later als fabriek van stalen ramen van de Broedergemeente te Zeist (tot 1952). Het pand vormde een onderdeel van de industrie en nijverheid die door de Broedergemeente werd ontwikkeld. Aan de afwerking te zien heeft links een pand tegen de smederij gestaan. Rechts, op het huidige parkeerterrein, bevonden zich pakhuizen.
Omschrijving
Een evenwijdig aan de Lageweg gelegen SMEDERIJ op een rechthoekige plattegrond van anderhalve bouwlaag onder een zadeldak met de nok haaks op de weg, dat gedekt is met gesmoorde Hollandse pannen. In de dakschilden bevinden zich twee kleine gietijzeren dakramen. Het voorste gedeelte van de fabriek is opgetrokken in kruisverband, het oudste, achterste deel is bepleisterd.
De voorgevel of noordgevel bevat drie rondboogvensters met ijzeren roedenverdeling. De kozijnen worden omlijst door gemetselde geprofileerde rondboogstrekken die met pilasters aan elkaar zijn gekoppeld. Een gemetselde profiellijst scheidt de eerste bouwlaag van de topgevel. De topgevel heeft een verdiept liggend spaarveld en bevat in het midden een rondboogvenster met een stalen kozijn. Boven het kozijn is een geprofileerde rondboogvormige strek gemetseld. De gevelbeëindiging kenmerkt zich door een tuit met twee trappen die door natuurstenen platen afgedekt zijn.
De linkerzijgevel van het pand is blind. De rechterzijgevel bevat drie rondboogvensters en een (niet meer authentieke) dubbele openslaande houten deur met als bovenlicht vier gekoppelde vensters. Het achter het fabriekje gelegen ouder bouwdeel heeft een lagere goothoogte. In de rechterzijgevel is een dubbele houten deur gezet. Ter hoogte van de halve verdieping bevindt zich een dakerker onderlessenaarsdak waarin een transportluik dat het dakschild deels doorbreekt. In de gevel zijn drie muurankers aangebracht. De achtergevel bevat enkel in de halve verdieping een drielichtsvenster met roedenverdeling. Ook aan deze zijde zijn muurankers aangebracht.
Waardering
Het pand, daterend uit omstreeks 1870, is van cultuurhistorisch belang vanwege de oorspronkelijke functie als smederij en fabriekje van stalen ramen, deel uitmakend van de Broedergemeente.

Description
A SMITHY running parallel to the Lageweg on a rectangular floor plan of one and a half storeys under a gabled roof with the ridge perpendicular to the road, covered with hidden Dutch tiles. In the roof slopes there are two small cast-iron roof lights. The front part of the factory is constructed in bond, the oldest, rear part is rendered.
The front facade or north facade contains three round-arched windows with iron glazing bars. The frames are outlined by moulded round-arched brick arches that are coupled together by pilasters. A moulded brick moulding separates the first storey from the gable wall. The gable wall has a recessed sparing field and contains in the centre a round-arched window with a steel frame. Above the frame a moulded round-arched brick arch is laid. The gable termination is characterised by a spout with two steps covered by natural stone slabs.
The left side facade of the premises is blind. The right side facade contains three round-arched windows and a (no longer authentic) double hinged wooden door with four coupled windows as fanlight. The older building component located behind the small factory has a lower eaves height. A double wooden door is set in the right side facade. At the height of the half storey there is a roof dormer with a half-hip roof in which a hoist opening that partly breaks through the roof slope. Three wall anchors are placed in the facade. The rear facade contains only at the half storey level a three-light window with glazing bars. Wall anchors are also placed on this side.
Valuation
The premises, dating from around 1870, are of cultural-historical importance because of the original function as a smithy and factory of steel windows, forming part of the Broedergemeente.
