Inleiding
Kantoorgebouw van de voormalige zilverfabriek van Gerritsen en Van Kempen, in 1931 gebouwd naar ontwerp van de Zeister architecten J. en Th. Stuivinga. In 1994 is het pand verbouwd, waarbij de stalen kozijnen zijn vervangen door aluminium exemplaren van dezelfde kleur doch met een grotere roedenverdeling. De indeling van het interieur van het kantoorgebouw werd eveneens gewijzigd, terwijl aan de achterzijde nieuwbouw verrees. Het pand met Amsterdamse School-invloeden ligt binnen het nijverheidsgebied van de Hernhutters en ligt op korte afstand van een watergang, behorend tot de aanleg van Het Slot. Vanuit het gebouw kijkt men uit op de ruimte achter de gebouwen aan het Broederplein. Van de besscherming zijn uitgesloten de aanbouw aan de achterzijde, de nieuwe kozijnen en het interieur van het pand.
Omschrijving
Aan de Karpervijver gelegen KANTOORGEBOUW van drie bouwlagen op een rechthoekige plattegrond onder een zadeldak van ongelijke goothoogten met de nok evenwijdig aan de straat. Het dak is bedekt met blauwe geglazuurde Hollandse pannen, het dakschild aan de straatzijde wordt doorbroken door drie horizontale dakkapellen van hout, ieder voorzien van een drielichtsvenster. De dakgoot is van hout en rust op klossen. De gevels zijn in Vlaams verband gemetseld.
De voorgevel of westgevel is tien traveeën breed, van elkaar gescheiden door afgeschuinde bakstenen pilasters voorzien van terra-cotta kapitelen in de vorm van ramskoppen.
Voor de middelste twee traveeën is op de begane grond een uitbouw van één bouwlaag met balkon gezet die voorzien is van een geleding met pilasters en een vensterindeling van vier traveeën. Boven de vensters is een houten lijst gezet, waarboven een balkonmuur, waarin een terra-cotta-reliëf met de tekst: "Gerritsen & Van Kempen". Rechts van de uitbouw bevindt zich de rondboogvormige hoofdentree, waarboven een terra-cottareliëf met het Nederlandse rijkswapen is aangebracht. Links van de ingang bevindt zich een gevelsteen met de tekst: `voor de 2e uitbreiding dezer fabriek werd op 4 juli 1931 deze gedenksteen gelegd door Johannes Albertus Adolf Gerritsen geboren 19 october 1921'. Tussen de eerste en tweede bouwlaag bevinden zich hardstenen verticale reliëfs met voorstellingen van gereedschappen, die gebruikt werden bij de bewerking van zilver.
De zijgevels hebben een tuitgevel-beëindiging met op de schouders en de tuiten hardstenen bollen. De rechterzijgevel bevat op de begane grond en de verdiepingen elk twee vensters; in de top is één venster aangebracht. De linkerzijgevel bevat op de begane grond rechts een getoogde deur en voorts op elke verdieping diverse vensters, met één venster in de top.
Het pand is via twee bakstenen boogbruggen, onderling verbonden door een muurdam, bereikbaar. De bruggen worden onderling verbonden door een kademuur met borstwering. Deze zijn opgetrokken uit dezelfde baksteen als waaruit de gevels van het kantoorgebouw zijn vervaardigd.
Waardering
Het kantoorgebouw van de voormalige zilverfabriek Gerritsen en Van Kempen uit 1931 is van cultuurhistorische betekenis als representatief gebouw van een industriebranche, afleesbaar aan de diverse in terra-cotta uitgevoerde symbolische reliëfs. Het object is van architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een industriegebouw waarin Amsterdamse School-elementen zijn verwerkt. The layout of the interior of the office building was likewise altered, while new construction arose on the rear side. The property, which shows Amsterdam School influences, is located within the industrial area of the Hernhutters and lies at a short distance from a waterway, belonging to the development of Het Slot. From the building one looks out onto the space behind the buildings on the Broederplein. Excluded from the protection are the extension on the rear side, the new window frames and the interior of the property.
Description
The OFFICE BUILDING located on the Karpervijver consists of three storeys on a rectangular ground plan under a gabled roof of unequal eaves heights with the ridge parallel to the street. The roof is covered with blue glazed Dutch tiles, the roof section on the street side is broken through by three horizontal wooden roof dormers, each fitted with a three-light window. The roof gutter is of wood and rests on corbels. The facades are built in Flemish bond.
The front facade or west facade is ten bays wide, separated from each other by chamfered brick pilasters fitted with terracotta capitals in the form of ram's heads.
For the middle two bays, a projection of one storey with balcony is positioned on the ground floor, which is fitted with a division of pilasters and a window arrangement of four bays. Above the windows is a wooden moulding, above which is a balcony wall, in which a terracotta relief with the text: "Gerritsen & Van Kempen". To the right of the projection is the round-arched main entrance, above which a terracotta relief with the Dutch state coat of arms has been applied. To the left of the entrance is a foundation stone with the text: 'for the 2nd extension of this factory this commemorative stone was laid on 4 July 1931 by Johannes Albertus Adolf Gerritsen born 19 October 1921'. Between the first and second storey are hard stone vertical reliefs depicting tools that were used in the working of silver.
The side facades have a spout gable termination with hard stone balls on the shoulders and the spouts. The right side facade contains on the ground floor and the storeys each two windows; in the top one window is positioned. The left side facade contains on the ground floor to the right an arched door and furthermore on each storey various windows, with one window in the top.
The property is accessible via two brick arched bridges, interconnected by a dam wall. The bridges are interconnected by a quay wall with parapet. These are constructed from the same brick as that from which the facades of the office building are made.
