Onderdeel 2

Omschrijving

PARKAANLEG, bestaande uit

a. oprijlaan

b. voorplein

c. park

d. kasteeleiland

- wegens de ouderdom;

- wegens de aanwezigheid van 17de en 18de-eeuwse elementen in de aanleg;

- wegens het vroeg 19de-eeuwse landschapspark aan de oostkant van het kasteel;

- wegens de cultuurhistorische en landschappelijk-visuele waarden;

Component 2

Description

PARK LAYOUT, consisting of

a. drive

b. forecourt

c. park

d. castle island

re a.: the drive, formerly lined with trees, now without any planting, runs from the Rechterensedijk in a north-easterly direction to the bridge leading to the forecourt, thereafter continuing as a farm track to one of the estate's farmhouses; asphalt surfacing; the route 18th century or older.

re b.: the forecourt lies in front of the castle between the outbuildings; on the moat side a retaining wall, which ends via a quarter-round bend at the gables of the outbuildings (see under 3A and 3B); brick paving with centrally a large round sunken grass bed; in the middle a vase (see under 8).

re c.: the park laid out in landscape style, gently undulating, 19th century, on an elongated ground plan, extends to the east of the castle island along the road; the northern boundary coincides with the curved line of the winter dike of the Vecht; the only open spaces in the park are two sight lines in grass: one from the castle over the moat to the Rechterensedijk; in this stands a vase (see under 8); the other runs from the monument (see under 6) likewise to the road; there is a system of footpaths, some of which are no longer in use; the park is accessible via a path running from the beginning of the drive through the narrow strip between the southern bend of the moat and the Rechterensedijk; formerly there was a wooden bridge over the moat to the east of the castle to the park, which was later replaced by a rope ferry that has since also disappeared; alongside much old deciduous timber, especially beech, there are several conifers in the park.

re d.: on the elongated south-west to north-east running castle island lies the castle with outbuildings at the south-west end; to the south and east of the castle only a sloping grassy field descending to the waterline with several solitary trees; the moat is very wide (in which the Vecht arm is recognised), except for the dug section in the north, where it is no more than a ditch; to the north-east of the castle lie, one behind the other, the (former) neo-geometric garden and the vegetable garden as well as, beside it, a small orchard. The geometric garden, in design a rose garden, now merely a grassy field with a vase (see under 8) lies slightly sunken relative to the castle and is separated from it by a balustrade with statues (see under 8); to the west of this garden a copse with old deciduous trees; two monumental plane trees at the edge; the garden is separated from the vegetable garden by a yew hedge. The vegetable garden, partly still in use as such, is closed on the north-west and north-east sides by garden walls (see under 5); there are still remnants of greenhouses and cold frames (see under 5).

Valuation

The PARK LAYOUT, belonging to the historic country estate Rechteren, is of general cultural-historical significance:

- on account of its age;

- on account of the presence of 17th and 18th century elements in the layout;

- on account of the early 19th century landscape park on the east side of the castle;

- on account of cultural-historical and landscape-visual values;

- on account of the spatial context in which the castle, outbuildings and other components are arranged.
