Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Detached STATION BUILDING from 1911-1912, belonging to the former Haarlemmermeer railway lines. The railway lines were laid out between 1900 and 1915 by the Hollandsche Electrische Spoorweg-maatschappij (HESM). In 1912 the track section Haarlem-Vijfhuizen-Hoofddorp-Leiden was put into operation. On commission of the HESM, a station building was designed, which was executed in various places. In some places the basic design was adapted (Oude Wetering, Leimuiden, Amstelveen, Aarlanderveen, Nieuw-Vennep). The station building of Vijfhuizen was executed, like the stations of Hoofddorp and Vinkeveen, according to the basic design. The station is situated on the former north-south oriented railway embankment. Originally the station contained a baggage depot (south), the entrance with ticket windows (centre), a waiting room (north) and on the entire first floor was the station keeper's dwelling. Nowadays (1995) the entire station building is in use as a residential house. Of the former railway site elements such as track or platform are no longer recognisable in the landscape; the embankment itself has been preserved. A short distance south of the station building is an associated double staff dwelling which does not fall under protection because it has been too much altered by renovations.
Description
Detached station building on rectangular ground plan, consisting of two storeys under a gabled roof, covered with red cross tiles. The ridge line runs north-south and runs parallel to the railway embankment. The roof is intersected at four places by a rectangular brick chimney, of which the two northern ones have been re-mortared. In the roof are two wooden roof dormers with inset gabled roofs, each containing a double three-light casement window. The building is constructed of whitewashed, partly white rendered brick, laid in Flemish bond. Glazed brick is used for the course above the plinth and for the decorative bands at the level of the lower and upper and middle cornices of the windows. Hardstone is used for the access steps, window sills and for the springing stones of the segmental arches. Unless otherwise stated, all windows originally contain a rectangular wooden T-window with three-light fanlight, a brick relieving arch and in the arch spandrel glazed tiles with figurative representations. The representations refer to the railways (flying wheel) and the Dutch landscape (polder land with fields, meadows, cattle and cloudy skies).
The front facade (E) has a width of five window bays. The left facade part (originally the entrance with ticket windows) projects slightly. On the ground floor the projecting section contains three window bays, of which two contain a window and the middle one the entrance, consisting of a double panel door with a six-light fanlight. On the first floor the projecting facade part has two window bays. The right facade part (originally the waiting room) contains on the ground floor two window bays and on the first floor three window bays, all with a T-window. The facade is terminated by a profiled wooden gutter moulding on corbels. To the left of the front facade is an extension (originally the baggage depot) of one storey under an inset hipped roof with a ceramic roof ornament on the ridge corner. The extension contains on the east side a double panel door with a six-light fanlight.
The left side facade (S) has on the ground floor the southern gable end of the rectangular extension which is blank. In the roof storey are two small sash windows, each with a two-light fanlight, linked by one segmental arch. The facade is terminated by a chalet-like roof overhang on corbels, filled top and straight roof boards.
The rear facade (W), the former platform side, has on the ground floor a width of four window bays, of which the two middle ones contain a window and the two outer ones a double panel door with multi-light fanlight. The left double panel door was the connection between waiting room and platform, the right double panel door was the connection between the ticket office space and the platform. On the central axis, between the ground floor and first floor, is a rectangular tile tableau with the station name "VIJFHUIZEN" on it. The first floor has a width of three window bays. The two outer bays originally each contain a double sash window with three-light fanlights, the middle window bay contains a narrow sash window with two-light fanlight. To the right of the rear facade is the western facade of the former baggage depot which contains a double panel door with six-light fanlight.
The right side facade (N) has on the ground floor no windows, on the first floor one window. Furthermore the facade has the same structure and termination as the left side facade.
The interior is still partially intact and contains among other things the original hall with tile flooring, hardstone skirting board at the base of the plinth, wainscoting of glazed tiles in various shades and the wooden ticket window wall. Furthermore the original sliding wall between the hall and the baggage depot and the serving hatch between ticket office space and baggage depot are still present; both provided with glass panels, set in wooden stile and rail work. Also several original panel doors are still present in the interior.
Valuation
The station building is of general importance from a cultural and architectural historical point of view as a well-preserved example of station architecture from the first decades of the 20th century in the North Holland countryside, built in a traditionalist building style with rich and still very well-preserved detailing.
Furthermore, the building is of importance from a social-historical point of view as a characteristic element from the development of railway architecture in the North Holland countryside between 1900 and 1930, in this case the development of the Haarlemmermeer railway lines.
Also, the station building has situational value through its prominent position on the relatively high railway embankment in the flat, low-lying polder land of the Haarlemmermeer polder.
