Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The PUMPING STATION for draining the Langerak polder was built in 1939 in a moderate Functionalist Expressionist architectural style. Prior to that time the polder was drained by three mills, of which the still-existing Westermolen enjoys national monument protection (mon. no. 23933). The Broekmolen burned down in 1940 due to wartime action, the Oostermolen was replaced by the mechanical scoop-wheel pumping station for which the foundations and scoop-wheel were reused. The service dwelling built south of the pumping station in the nineteen-fifties is of subordinate importance for protection. The scoop-wheel has a water displacement of 90-100m3/min and is driven by means of a single-cylinder Crossley diesel motor, type HDE 11 with a horizontal cylinder and a power of 50/60 hp. A flywheel is coupled to this motor and on the same shaft a hand-operated friction clutch for driving the further components needed to set the paddle-wheel outside the building in motion. These further components consist of an attached pulley that carries a wide drive belt which via a tension pulley drives a larger pulley. This entire assembly moves the pinion that engages with a large so-called herringbone gear wheel, which in turn is directly coupled to the paddle-wheel outside. Furthermore, an installation is present to pump air for starting purposes and a freshwater cooling pump.
The drainage was taken over in 1978 by a screw pumping station that was built to the west of the existing pumping station and is not under consideration for protection. The scoop-wheel pumping station together with the mill and the screw pumping station forms an ensemble and visualises three generations of drainage techniques. N.B. The quays of both the fore- and the after-water channel were originally of masonry and belonged to the former Oostmolen. The fore-water channel is closed off and provided with a concrete pipe for water processing. The originally steel window frames of the building have been replaced with timber.
Description
Simple single-storey engine house with a square ground plan erected in red machine-made brick. The overhanging hipped roof is supported on wooden corbels and is covered with Tuile de Nord tiles. On the roof stand two small brick chimneys. Above the wall openings a decorative band is laid in brickwork along three elevations. In the front elevation (west) a coupled six-pane window is placed. The left side elevation (north) has a tall four-pane window and the rear elevation a wooden door under a fanlight and a wide nine-pane window. Against the right elevation a scoop-wheel with a diameter of 5.75 metres is placed. The scoop-wheel has a round cast-iron water shaft and steel paddles.
The interior of the engine house has remained original and provides, besides the Crossley diesel motor, space for a draught vestibule and a small office. The motor is surrounded by an iron railing.
Valuation
The pumping station in the Langerak polder is of general cultural-historical importance because of its water-management significance in the polder and as one of the last built and preserved scoop-wheel pumping stations driven by a diesel motor in the Netherlands.
The pumping station is of general architectural-historical importance because of its characteristically sober architectural style. In combination with the Crossley motor that drives the scoop-wheel, the pumping station is also an example of original and meanwhile rare industrial technique. The pumping station is reasonably intact in main form, material use and detailing.
The pumping station is of urban-planning importance as part of the ensemble consisting of three generations of drainage technique at a centuries-old discharge point.
The ensemble forms part of the historical structure of the landscape and has a functional and visual relationship with it.
