Description
Introduction
DWELLING built around 1860 as a rentier's house in the Craftsman Traditionalist style, commissioned by Cornelis Kuijlenburg van Harten and Corstiana Cornelia Versteeg. The dwelling and its associated farmhouse (protected under national monument number 30595) are visually prominent, situated on the dyke along one of the two access roads on the western side of Nieuwpoort. Both buildings form an ensemble and stand next to each other, the rentier's house to the west of the farmhouse, with the ridge parallel to the street. Narrow gardens surrounded by hedges have been laid out in front of the buildings.
Description
DWELLING built on an L-shaped floor plan over a single storey in yellow Ijssel brick. The transverse structure at the street side along the dyke is cellared and has a hipped roof covered with smoked Dutch tiles and roof ridge ornaments. Beneath the overhanging eaves is a decorative carved wooden drip moulding. Above the front facade along the roof edge is a handsome carved fascia board with pseudo acroteria. The rear, narrower and lower structure has a hipped roof covered with smoked Dutch tiles. The roof edge of the rear facade (south) is finished with simple wind bracing ending in a weathercock. The six-paned sash windows are hung with shutters. The wall openings are closed by cock's-comb finials. Symmetrical front facade (north) with a central risalit in which the entrance is placed, consisting of a wooden panel door beneath a fanlight. On either side of the risalit is a window. Centrally above the risalit is a dormer under a pitched roof with a carved wooden drip moulding. The dormer has a chevron-arched four-paned window.
The left side facade (east) has a window in the front part and in the lower structure a straight closed door with a small decorative cast-iron grille.
The right side facade (west) has windows and in the rear side of the front transverse structure is also a window placed. In the rear structure there is a window in the western facade and in the rear facade a terrace door, a small window and a window in the gable top.
Appreciation
The dwelling built as a rentier's house is of general cultural-historical importance as an illustration of a social development on a farm at the end of the 19th century in which the retired farmer built his own dwelling next to the farmhouse.
The rentier's house is of general architectural-historical importance because of the Traditional Craftsman building style and fine detailing. The building is reasonably intact in main form, material use and detailing.
The building is visually prominent at the entrance to Nieuwpoort and forms a functional and situational unity with the farmhouse.
