The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The LOCK GATE Het Nieuwe Verlaat was built in 1914 at the mouth of the Nieuwe Vecht in the Overijsselse Vecht. The lock gate normally stands open and is closed only at extremely high water levels in the Vecht. It is therefore a so-called weir lock gate. The lock gate lies to the west of the village of Berkum in the municipality of Zwolle.

The oval chamber of the lock gate is now rare. Oval lock chambers were used from the fifteenth century onwards. After 1900, locks usually had straight walls. The combination of a concrete chamber wall with masonry lock gate head walls was not common, so in that respect too the lock gate is quite unique.

Description

The lock gate consists of two lock gate heads with an oval chamber between them. The outer lock gate head is constructed higher than the inner lock gate head, so that at extremely high water levels locking is not possible. The lock gate heads are built of red brick. The corners, striking stiles and copingstones are executed in red granite. Each lock gate head has a set of steel pointed gates, which if necessary hold back the Vecht water. The passage width is approximately six metres.

The chamber walls are made of concrete. The oval form of the chamber makes it possible to lock ships side by side, although this form is not the most favourable for this purpose. This form was probably chosen to create a somewhat vaulted action in the walls, so that the elements would not be pushed forward by ground pressure.

Valuation

The lock gate is of general cultural, architectural-historical and urban-planning importance because of:

- the rarity of an oval chamber in a lock gate

- as a late example of a lock gate with an oval chamber

- the unusual combination of masonry lock gate heads and a concrete chamber wall

- the integrity of the chamber and lock gate heads
